It could. It depends on how much your hand has blocked the flash and whether it has resulted in a shadow. If it's over a portion of where the flash tube is, at the least it reduces the amount of light the flash can contribute to the photograph. Some external flashes have a sensor built into the flash to determine when it has put out enough light and quench the flash tube. It works by measuring how much light has reflected back to the flash unit. If you hand blocks this sensor, it cannot work correctly. -- John
