Planning to Buy

I am very interested in photography, and planning to buy a camera. What type of camera would you recommend for a beginner? How can I determine the quality of a used camera? I can only afford to buy a camera (body and lens) at a price below $500. What should I do? Please let me know everything I need to know.
Thank you for your help.

You have a lot of good questions here.

Read my guide to buying a camera, if you haven't already.

If you want a quick recommendation, consider the Canon Elan II with EF28-80 USM V Zoom Lens.

To determine the quality of a used camera, ask the seller if you can run a roll of film through it. Get the film developed at a nearby one-hour lab and look at the results. If you see foggy edges, blurry photos (that are not caused by improper shooting ;^) or any other defects, pass on the camera. If the results look good, you may want to buy it. I will write more on this subject; it deserves its own article. Stay tuned to the BetterPhoto Buyer's Guide for more...
