Available light with digital

My photos with available light (incadescent)using my Sony dsc 5650 are terrible, since they turn out with grain the size of a Buick. I dialed down the default iso from 1000 to 400, with no improvement. Do I have to spend a thousand bucks to get a digital to give me good available light flicks? Film is looking real good right now.

Do you have it on night mode? That helps some. Mine (not the same model as yours) sometimes uses as low as 200 when on night mode, so I let the camera select when I do my sunsets.
