Kit lens on Canon EOS 350D
Does anyone find that the lens supplied with this camera is basically useless???Also what would you recomend as a replacement (On a budget unfortunately) focal length around 28 - 80 that will produce sharp images.

Canon sells its bodies in kits with the cheaper canon lenses. That is the $60-$75 lense. You are going to need to spend about 5x to get into a lense that is usable and 10x to get an L series Canon. Check out KEH.com Lots of used lenses with the edge taken off. Wait for the good lense, it is worth it. . .remember all the light must pass through it. Chris Browne

With Digial Bodies a focal length multiplier of 1.6x is common; therefore, an 19mm lens provides the same field of view of a 30.4mm. The 28 to 105 will be a 45mm to 168mm lense. We use a 24-85 Canon on a film back; using it on the Digital Rebel would give you 38mm to 136mm. So you loose the wide angle with most lenses when using on digital unless the cmos or ccd is the same size as 35mm film (24mm x 36mm) But the Cmos or ccd is often around 15mm x 22mm). Try to rent the lense first; it is a $200 lense; the 24-85 is a $300 lense! Neither is an L-series Canon!!!!! The L-series is fantastic! Still saving the pennies though. It is worth it. $60 per month = $720 = 28-80 F2.8-4 L ULTRASONIC (72) WITH HOOD, CAPS, 35MM SLR AUTO FOCUS ZOOM WIDE ANGLE LENS

thanks again - looked at the 24-85 and am very interested. its 210 UK pounds for it so I think I will go for that one because of the focal length multiplier factor and I believe it has superior optics. One final question (I promise!!) Are the images sharp - are you impressed with it. Wheat do you use it for??? thanks again
