Photography Question

Audrea Telkamp

Distance needed for group portrait

How far away should a photographyer be from a group of 4-6 people (2-3 rows of faces) to avoid the faces in the front row appearing larger than those in the back? I could have the back row lean forward but I would rather not in order to achieve the pose I am after. My camera does have a zoom lens. Thanks in advance!

If you have a zoom and not a 50mm, set the zoom to about the 40-50mm range. Move in so that you have all the people, and a little space on each side. Your lens will be at its sharpest at about f8, or f11.
