Photography Question

Blurry photos with AE-1 continued

The lenses came with the camera. I am very new to photography, and I don't know very much. I had the aperture set on "A" for all of the photos. I'm confused about F-stop. Is it the aperture setting? I am really wanting to learn manual camera's.

  Welcome.
If you don't have one, you can read the user manual for your camera at http://www.canonfd.com/choose.htm.
Yes, F-stop is the aperture setting.
With the aperture ring set to A, the camera is in shutter-priority program. You choose the shutter speed and the camera will automatically determine and set the lens aperture that will give a good exposure. Make sure that the camera is set for the ISO (aka ASA) rating of the film that is loaded.

Blurry photos can be caused by bad focus, too slow a shutter speed, or you may simply be misinterpretting the out of focus area due to shallow depth of field that results with larger aperture (small F-number) settings.

The F-numbers are the denominator of a ratio. The aperture diameter is stated as a ratio of the lens focal length: f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6,... This convention standardizes exposure calculations. In general, longer focal length lenses pass less light than shorter focal lengths. But two lenses set to the same aperture setting, such as f/4, will pass the same amount of light to the film, regardless of focal length. The larger the f-number, the smaller the aperture.
