stupid ??, I have a Nikon N80 and I don't understa

This is really dumb to other people I'm sure but I'm new to photography and got this camera for Christmas. I don't understand what the numbers in the viewfinder mean when I am trying to manually set the shutter speed and the Fstop. The manual talks about 1/1000, etc but I don't see that in the LED display. Can anyone explain the numbers to me?

getting confused because the shutter speed isn't expressed as a fraction?
What are the actual numbers you see?

Shutter speeds in your view finder are expressed as "30, 60, 125, 250," etc., but they are really fractions - 1/30th of a second, 1/60th of a second, 1/125th of a second, etc.
1/1000th of a second would probably be displayed as "1000."

There is a big difference between being stupid or dumb and uninfomed. Don't beat yourself up. Just ask a question and you will receive some wonderful information, like what you got from Michael.
