Christmas Lights as Backdrop

I have been trying to shoot some portrait stuff for Christmas with a Christmas tree in the background with lights. And when I take the photo, the lights appear off, even though they are on. Can anyone offer suggestions for me to try to make lights show up in the photo? I was shooting 125th/second with two studio flashes positioned out away from the Canon 10D.

The colored tree lights are very much dimmer than your studio lights, and 1/125 shutter speed does not give them enough exposure. Try longer shutter speeds of 1/60 or 1/30 or 1/15 ... Below 1/30, you'll need to instruct your subjects to not move. Longer shutter speeds will not affect the exposure given by the studio flashes.
