buying my first slr
i have been saving diligently for my first slr, have had my eye on the canon rebel xti. so, I can afford to buy the body, but being frugal, I need to know what lens are the most important. I love shooting birds, which requires some distance.... any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

This is a tough question to answer. It depends on where the birds are you want to photograph and in what manner you want you images to appear. If you are looking for full frame flight shots and close-ups of wrens, finches, warblers, etc. you will need a lot of glass, which equates into a lot of money. If taking shots at the back yard feeders and around local state and county parks where the wildlife and birds are pretty accustomed to people, you can get by with a little less. The Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM (or equivalent Sigma model) is a good starter lens that won’t break the bank since you indicated that you are in the saving mode for the camera body. It will give you some range to work with beyond what you might be considering for your everyday lens or walking around lens. Most find out pretty quickly if they are interested in bird photographs they want better glass, more reach and something with some image stabilization as well. This usually takes you into L glass and a great deal more money. I have progressed to the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS and get fairly decent bird shots, but it takes a little bit of work to get into positions and a lot of luck. It’s not as fast as most want for this activity, but again money was a consideration. When you start looking at lens that cost 4 or 5 times what you have spent on the camera body itself, you realize quickly what those taking the great photographs we enjoy in the magazines and books publish on the subject must have invested.
