Help !!! Burning CD & DVD

Hi, I'm hoping to get some help with
my PC's internal CD burner, it keeps giving me an error message. "Cannot complete the CD writing wizard. There was an error in the writing process."

~I'm using Memorex CD-R's Disc. Might that be a issue?
~HP wasn't much help and Computer says everything is working properly.
~I can read others CD's that were burnt some time ago however some of the images come out partially gray.
Are there any ideas as to what might be the problem?
Also, What are some of the recommended External CD Writers. My PC is a HP with Windows XP. Right now if my computer crashes I'll stand to lose thousands of images. Scarey!!!
Thanks ~ Penny

Check out the maker of the internal burner; sometimes that can be an issue but your problem is more likely the CDs you're using.

I used Memorex CD-RWs with burn speed of 4X up to 8X, with no problem. I then purchased 10 with speeds to 80X [in two 5-packs.] Although the burns appeared to be successful, I made the mistake of removing the CDs AND deleting the burned images before I checked them out. Lost 10 CDs of photos [most were scanned prints so no permanent harm done.]

I called Roxio [I use Easy Media Creator 8.0 - they helped check out my burner, a Plextor.] A-OK. They suggested they'd had a number of complaints on Memorex, obviously this could have been a CYA regarding their software.

I've changed to Sony and, in fact, have been happy with Staples own brand of CDs and DVDs. I realize there are those that say one must use "archival [Gold] CDs or DVDs," but I'm really skeptical about whether there is really a difference. You can't tell me that producers of of DVDs for movies wouldn't use the cheapest available.

If your burner can burn DVDs you might want to consider using them for saving your files, especially because you can save 4GIG vs. 700 MB of data.

  RE: External...

I bought a Sony DVD+-R 20X external (USB) a couple months ago & no problems (so far) ... created ~20 movie DVDs, but didn't play all through (sent to family & friends... no one's complained so far.)

Main problem I've had in the past with external CD writers is, over time, the heads seem to get out of alignment & CDs written on one drive can only be read back by the same drive. I have about 10 back-up CDs from a few years ago I need to restore some files from & I have to pull the old writer out and install just to do this.

Pain!

BTW, I also just bought a 500GB external hard drive (Free Agent) and have it set to nightly backup as added insurance. They are cheap (~150US) ... highly recomended.
