Compare for me

I currently own a Pentax ist DL. I have been researching the Pentax K10D. What is the advantage buying the K10D? Is there a big picture difference between 10 megs and 6.1 megs?

It may not be the pixel count, but the size of the LCD screen that may make a difference for you. The newer SLR's tend to have bigger screens. If, as I do, you use the viewfinder, the screen size makes less difference.

Another difference is maybe the automatic sensor cleaning that the K10D has over the istD series. If you're like me and tend to keep a favorite prime lens or zoom on the camera, this may make less difference.

Open a RAW from the istD in Photoshop. Go to Image Size and enter 300 in the resolution block, Resample turned OFF. The program will calculate the best print size at normal print resolution you can expect. Only you know whether that is the max print size you're likely to need. Keep in mind, too, that you may want to crop out some image to make a better composition. If you do that, are you left with a printable size? Personally, I like 5 x 7's.

I have both the ist DL and the K10D. If you are a casual shooter, the ist DL is fine. Otherwise there is no comparrison except lens mounts. The K10D besides the higher resolution is built to take a beating. It has built in vibration reduction and sensor cleaning. The auto-focus is much faster and in my opinion more reliable.
