Canon Lenses
Hey Everyone, I'm going to be buying a lense here pretty soon for my canon DSLR and was wondering if I could get some advice. The two lenses im looking at are the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L and the Canon EF-S 17-85mm. I know the L series are supposed to be great but I would like to be able to get up to 85mm. The EF-S lense is cheaper also and so I am wondering should I stick with the L series for the quality or go with a cheaper lense that let's me get a little bit more distance. Any advice/comments would be really appreciated, thanks!

Depends on what DSLR you have. If it's a 10D/20D/Digital Rebel, or another one with an APS-C size sensor, go with the EF-S 17-85 IS USM. That IS is invaluable, even though its a f/5.6 at 85mm, its smaller and a better deal. If you have an SLR with a full size sensor, the EF-S won't work, so you'll want to go for that 17-40 L. The 17-85 is also cheaper, lighter, and smaller. I'd buy the lens hood for it to protect the images and the lens. It takes 67mm filters, too.

Matt, With all due respect, you already know the difference between the two lenses, so YOU need to decide for yourself, based on that knowledge. There are four factors at play here - price, weight, quality, and versatility. Only you can place these in a priority that suits you. Asking us to prioritize these factors will only give you our opinion, which may be totally wrong for you. Michael H. Cothran
