Photo resolution
At the office we need to take digital pictures which have a resolution of 300 dpi in order for our printers to produce a quality catalogue. I am looking for advice on which camera would be best for this, or what features I need to look for when purchasing the camera. Thanks

What size prints do you need to make? In order to calculate the number of megapixels you need, you'll need to take your dots per inch and multiply it times the number of inches to get the number of pixels you'll need in each dimension. All cameras should tell you what the dimensions are in terms of pixels. The quality of the resolution of a camera also depends on the size of the sensor. Be careful that you don't try to stuff too many megapixels on a small sensor because this will introduce noise into your pictures. What are you planning to take pictures of? Are you looking for a point-and-shoot or something with exchangable lenses? Pam

Thanks Pam. The pictures in this case were 8x10 and were still shots of pieces of clothing. Bascially a point and shoot is what I am looking for.

I've never taken pictures like this, so I can't recommend a particular camera. My camera, which only has 2.1 megapixels, can make 8x10s that are pretty good. Probably if you have 3 or more megapixels you'll be fine. You probably don't have to worry too much about zoom either. Just remember that optical zoom is all that counts. Once you start zooming digitally, you lose resolution. Maybe someone else will know of a particular camera that's good and doesn't have a lot of noise caused by a small sensor. Pam

The Nikon D70 would be a good candidate...

I've heard a lot of good things about the D70, but it is a DSLR. I don't know what your price range is, but if you can afford it, this would be a good investment for a time when you're taking other types of photos. If you're sure about wanting a point-and-shoot, here's a place where you can find some reviews of different models: http://www.betterphoto.com/reviews.php Pam

To make an 8 x 10 at 300 PPI (DPI) you need a 20.6 MB file. A 6 megapixel camera will give you an 18 MB file. To do what you want with no interpolation you need at least a 7 megapixel camera, but interpolating a 6 megapixel 18 MB file to 20.6 MB would cause no visual problems. I hope that helps.
