I don't know about Sony, per se, but do use a telephoto converter for my Olympus. A telephoto converter is a lens that attaches to the built in lens on your camera and increases the zoom capabilities. My converter is a 1.7x which means that it will take my built in 10x optical zoom and turn it into 17x total zoom. This greatly increases the "closeness" of my wildlife shots. The increase you get is proportional to the size of the converter (I've seen 'doublers' which are 2x converters as well). Some notes: Because the converter attaches to the end of your lens, it cuts off some of the 'wide angle' views. When I'm using my converter, my camera must be zoomed to full telephoto (10x) so all of my shots with the converter on are 17x, it can't be adjusted or you get 'vignetting' or a black ring around the edge of your picture. With a converter, you will also lose light gathering capabilities because you're increasing the length of your lens without increasing its width. This means that the converter works best in bright light conditions. You'll lose contrast in your shots when taken with the teleconverter. Also, using a telephotic converter decreases the depth of field that you can get. When photographing birds, this often makes it difficult to be sure the focus is on the bird and not the branch that it's sitting on. Any handshake that occurs will be magnified. Be really careful especially at slower shutter speeds. All that being said, I really like my converter and use it a lot. Mostly I've just had to adjust some of my practices. I've gotten some great close-ups. I was discussing this on an earlier thread to which I attached two pictures. Here's an address for that discussion: http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/QnAdetail.php?threadID=10845 Also, I just recently submitted a photo to the contest which used the converter. I was able to eliminate most contrast problems in Photoshop. Here's the address: http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/discussionDetail.php?threadID=154453 Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. I'll keep this thread linked to my email. Pam
