The second lense for my D70

I recently purchased a Nikon D70 SLR and I love it....but I need a zoom lens maybe 70mm to 300mm. Does anyone have advice on any of the after market zooms - Sigma, Quantray, Tameron etc. If so I'd appreciate hearing your opinions - pros and cons.
Thank you,
Jodz

I have the same camera. I use the standard lens (28-70) and it's great. I sold my N90 when I purchased it. I did keep my 70-210 lens. It is not a D lens but it works great. I bought it used from a shop several years ago and it works really well. Keep in mind the 1.5 magnification that happens with your digital camera. So a 70 -300 will actually be a 105-450mm. There might be a lot of shake with the 450. I think it's hard to beat the Nikon lens.

  Jan,
Thanks for your input...and yeah, I'm definately looking at tripod moments!
The Nikon lens with VR is about $1500 dollars and that is more than I want to spend right now. In some of the forums several people have really good things to say about Sigma (much less expensive) and I'm curious...but your right about Nikon glass.
Thanks again,
jody

I am a Canon guy so...

The first thing you should do is switch ;)

Seriously,

I would recommend you stick with Nikon, even if you don't get the top of the line stuff (again I don't know which is which with Nikon)look at used lenses in the lengths you are interested in.

some places to check
www.fredmiranda.com - buy/sell forum
www.keh.com
www.ebay.com (duh)
www.sportsshooter.com classifieds
www.robgalbraith.com buy/sell section

I would also check reviews of the sigma lens you are looking at, they can be hit and miss on Q/C in manufacturing.

The only non-Canon glass I have is a Tokina ATX-Pro 28-80 f2.8, that has been a great lens for $300 or so, I think Tokina may have the same Q/C stuff going on that Sigma does so research research research.

You can safely rely that Canon and Nikon won't make junk (with some rare exceptions) The other guys less so.

  Gil,
Thank you for the web sites. They were all new to me with the exception of e-bay.
I don't want to buy junk, but I do want to explore some other possibilites. I was taling to a guy from Popular Photography the other day and he recommended Sigma - but also said you couldn't beat Nikon glass.
Thanks again,
jody
