Did I get taken? I did my online research and settled on the Fuji F7000, but when I went to the camera store a good salesman talked me into the F610 instead, for $100 more. I gave up the camera RAW feature, which I'm not sure I understand anyway, for 6 mp instead of 3. I think the extra res. will be helpful because I frequently want to crop bits out of a photo and enlarge them. But I can't get rid of the feeling that I might not have gotten such a good deal. What do you think - did I get taken?

No one can take advantage of you without your permission. The F610 normally sells for much less than the S7000. The S7000 has the same sensor and pixel count as the F610. Are you sure that you weren't instead comparing the F610 to either the S3000 or S5000 (both 3mp cameras and much less expensive than the F610)? You only need RAW files if you plan on doing much post-production/editing. JPEG is fine for simply capturing and printing the images without much manipulation.

Thanks, jon, for your response. I accidentally added a 0 to the camera model name. The camera I intended to purchase is the new Fujifilm F700, which is a 3 MP camera which has been getting good reviews. One mail order outfit quotes the F700 at L249 and the F610 at L369. Can you compare these 2 models for me, please? I'm a serious amateur who's in the process of learning PS CS, whew! quite a learning curve but I'm determined.

I couldn't do as good and thorough job of reviewing these as Digital Photography Review has. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/.
