Slave Flash
Since no one at BetterPhoto.com uses a pocket wizard, let me try this question.Lets pretend I use a Canon 35mm camera, and a Metz 54-3 flash. I want to use the flash off-camera wirelessly. What is the best way to achieve this? Thanks, Jerry

Jerry, I've used three methods for firing off-camera flash:The simplest, is a low-powered shoe mounted unit pointing straight up. The light it creates does not affect the scene, but activates a slaved unit on the other side of the room. This works best outdoors, or indoors with a high or dark ceiling. I've also used Quantum Radio Slaves to fire remote flash, but not often enough to render an opinion. (I mostly use the radio slave to fire my motor-driven cameras by remote.) The most efficient system for me, has been a shoe-mounted infra-red trigger. The one I have is Wein SS-JR, but there are better ones out there from which to choose. They emit a tiny burst of infra-red light which is picked up by a corresponding slave attached to your flash unit. (You will need a Metz-to-PC cord to attach it.) These work great indoors..(even through walls and around corners). Effective range will vary by model. They can also be used outdoors, but you will be limited to "line of sight". Bob

The Metz 54-3 can be used in wireless TTL "with the proper Metz adaptor." Metz's English language site isn't available now so I can't get any farther than that.

Yes, but it requires a main flash to trigger it. What I'm saying is that I don't want to use two flashes, just one. And, in reading the literature, it looks like an infrared trigger wont set it off. I'm leaning toward the Pocket Wizard, but I can't tell if it supports TTL. I have an email into their CS dept. Jerry
