How to unstick photo/negative without damage

I discovered a stack of family photos/negative that over the years 15+ in the attic have somewhat fused. There is evidence of water leaks and the cardboard box they were stored in fell apart from the bottom. They have suffered from neglect. However the b/W negatives may be useable so I'd like to retrieve them if I can. Will Soaking them in a pan of ____ work. How about the prints. I can scan them and do Photoshop corrections but not if the details are pulled off. The color stuff I have written off. Thanks for your help. Phil G.
