Taking pictures at a night show
I just recently bought a new Minolta MAxxum 5. I have been using a Minolta X-370. I am taking photos of monster trucks at a night show in a lighted outside arena. I am using 1600 speed film and a 70-300mm lens. I know the settings for the newer cameras are different. What would be the best?

I too use a Minolta Maxxum 5 as camera of choice. At a recent air show I took photos of jets flying high speed training exercises with 800 speed film & both the 28-105mm lense and 70-300mm lense. One word of caution though, if you want to use the 70-300mm lense use a tripod!! It is virtually impossible to handhold that lense without having camera shake! The 800 speed film should handle most anything - I use it for sports activities, landscapes, wildlife etc. Although I keep 200 & 400 on hand if I want to use it. I never have tried the 1600. Try experimenting with 800 and have the lab push it to 1600 and see what happens. Experiment with something that will not be important fo a test run.

Steve: Set the Program mode and let the camera take care of the exposure. Using the Honeycomb Metering pattern. To be certain to prevent any underexposure (to assure finer grain) set a +0.5 exposure compensation factor. The Program will automatically set a fast shutter speed. If it's very dark, the shutter speeds may be too long for sharp images ... that happens in such photography. Cheers! Peter Burian

Thank you both for your help! I really appreciate it. I have used 800 speed film before and it was with an older camera. The results were actually pretty good. I did use the 70-300mm but I couldn't take my tripod in with me. The pictures still turned out great, except for the ones where I zoomed in. NExt time, Peter, I will try your suggestion, too. Thanks, again!
