A 2x teleconverter reduces the effective maximum f/stop of the lens you put it on by two f/stops. So if you have a 2.8 lens, if you put a 2x teleconverter on it, you'll have to change your exposure, or if it's an auto exposure camera, the camera will change the exposure as if you were using a f/5.6 lens.
