mamiya infinity focusing Hello! I recently got a Mamiya 645E with a Mamiya 80 mm f/2.8 N. The problem that I have with it is that I can't seem to focus it at a very far distance. I can turn it to the infinity sign but if I'm shooting a lake scene I have to depend on stopping down a lot to get the opposite side in focus. What's up with this? I don't assume I can do anything about it besides force myself to stop down but I know I'll want to shoot wide open on some other subject sometime. Thanks

Andrew, increase your f/stop to a higher number which will increase your depth of field (DOF), area in sharp focus. When taking the lake scene that you described use about a F/11 with the correct shutter speed and you should have a good sharply focused photo. ie asa 400 film, f/11, 1/250 sec. on a sunny day should give you a good exposure. Shooting wide open f/2.8 will give you a very narrow or small dof. There is a site on the net that will calculate DOF for verious lens and cameras. enter Depth of Field into your browser and search. hey there! thanks, I believe I figured out what was wrong. At some point the focusing screen (non-removable) must have gotten bumped or subjected to some amount of shock (used camera) and it was at an angle/crooked. I sent it back to KEH after talking with them on the phone and although it took a while to get it back, they ended up giving me one in EX condition (I had bought BG condition) because it took so long. I even got a replacement lens cap. I have yet to put film through it but it does focus unlike the other.

Andrew, I must say a huge congrats on your mommamiya. as you know this is a well reputed brand and you'll definitely enjoy your use with it. also don't be deterred from your bad experience with the BGN condition with KEH. i've read so many storied about people getting steals on equipment from the BGN condition. I just bought a 180mm for my RB in BGN condition for $99 and it's virtually brand new. the glass is unbelievable and there's hardly no scratches on the darn thing. the front element was a tad loose (but not anything to degrade the quality) but my local shop tightened it right up for me. so yeah if this is a keeper for you and you want to invest in lenses, give the BGN at KEH another try man! CONGRATS again, you'll love Mamiya. I do. Justin p.s. i'm moving home (separating the Air Force) in Feb. so we'll have to meet up and go shooting sometime. You're at the IU campus down in bloomtown right? take it easy man, congrats again. p.p.s. oh yeah...GET SOME VELVIA!!!!! (not the 100F) but the straight 50 or 100. and I guess they're releasing a Velvia II (bringin' back the 50 ISO)

Yeah, everything else aboug the camera was great except the screen but of course it wasn't supposed to be like that so they much have just missed it when it went through. I'm workin on the Velvia, I've got some Provia right now for some photos I should be doing of some dresses soon so I'll see how that goes. Going out shooting sounds like a good idea. I bet you'll be glad to get home too. I've used Velvia for 35mm quite a bit but yeah, I'll definitly gobble up (I know, kinda late for jokes like that, haha) some MF velvia and see how that goes. After having a digital class all this semester I can't wait to get back to the REAL darkroom haha. It'll be a 4x5 LF class. hahahahaha! Now there's some velvia I need to try :)
