indoor sports shots

You asked about the camera used and sutter speeds. The camera is a Minolta QTsi Maxxum. The telephoto lens is minolta 75-300 AF Zoom. Everything about this camera is automatic, the only things I can change is the modes. 1) Portrait mode
2) landscape mode 3) close-up mode 4) sports mode 5) night Portrait mode.
I set the Mode to sports, and being so far away the flash will not lite the subject so we turn it off. We tried the flash, but with telephoto the eyes glow like an animal shot. We assume the sports mode would set the sutter speed to stop the image but it did not. There are no setting that you see in the view finder other then auto focus is complete and ready for the shot. The manual reads that in this mode the focusing is continual and sutter speed will stop the action.
Why doesn't it take good pictures? We use a tripod to steady for telephoto shots. This camera takes great action shots outside. Thanks for you reply

  welcome lloyd,
ah yes.lens is probably a f4 to f5.6.
on camera flash is crap, won't cover more than 20 feet at most.can't bump the shutter speed up any at all.
now the manual did'nt actually say it would stop the action.well yeah under acceptable light.
ok,lets talk film.go with at least 800 speed iso film.to be safe go ahead and get 1600 speed.a little fuzzy but ya really don't have much choice.
with your camera sports mode is as you said the best setting.right.
you have what's called a slow lens.great with a lot of light but after that it is just too slow.just not enough light.
you actually do have the option of manual or auto focus.
I have one of those cameras, nice but limited.great starter camera.
try the faster speed films,sam

well saw your other post.your already at 800.
inside a gym or arena go up to 3200 with your lens..
I still have much trouble at 800 and my 50mm f1.7.
a lot of money would help.
good luck,sam
