indoor sports shots with telephoto lens

I have tried to take sports shots inside a gym, with little luck. Using a telephoto lens and 800 speed film and no flash, the pictures were to bright and grainy. I also used a tripod to steady the camera. Some pictures were still blurry. What else can I try. If I use the flash the red eye is terrible.

There are programs for red eye. What shutter speed and aperture are you using? How does the flash work from so far away (you need telephoto?)? Is it one of those add-on flashes?
This information would help in answering you.

But..... Use a faster shutter speed! If the image is too bright and some pictures are blurry, use a faster shutter speed! I should point out that at high zooms camera shake is magnified and the depth of field is small.
