Photographing the moon

How do you take a photo of the moon or other planets visible to naked eye? I have heard that Mars will be close to the earth in August and much more visible than it has been for thousands of years. Can an amateur photographer take a decent photo of this event?

Hi Jason - thanks for your response - I'm glad you got the same e-mail so you know where I heard about Mars being near the earth - thanks for setting me straight on that! I guess I can forget about photographing that event! But it's good to know how to photograph the moon anyway.

Do we need a telephoto lens or some special filter? if someone shoot with a regular 35-80mm lens, will it be okay?

What about at night?

Thanks

It will be very small at 80mm.
