Slide scanning services
I have quite a collection of slides, some of which are good enough that I would like a high quality scan that I could print large images from. After pouring through reviews of film scanners and getting less than optimal results with my epson 3170(I know, I know!) I have decided that I'd rather just send them off somewhere and let someone else do it. I will soon be buying a dslr and will have less need for slide scanning, anyway; mostly, I just want scans of images I've already shot. Anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone used Larsen Digital Services? 100 scans at 4000 dpi will cost about $100.00. Is there any advantage to getting TIFF files over JPG, since I could just convert to TIFF in photoshop anyway? I am hoping to show and sell some work, so I want quality, but is it really necessary to pay $15-20 per scan, as I've read in some places?

Jean, 100 scans @ 4000 ppi for $100 sounds a little too good to be true. That comes out to $1.00 each. I can't see how anyone could do them for you that cheap. If it were $1000 ($10 each) it would be more in line, even with a volume discount. And on top of that, I presume they will have to burn the files to CD's for you. Ain't no way anyone can make any profit at all charging $1.00 a piece. Be sure you are reading it right. FYI - a 4000 ppi scan will give you a 55 MB file. Plenty of detail, and big enough for some nice enlargements. I own a Nikon LS-9000 ED 4000 ppi scanner, and do my own scanning routinely. In fact, the scanner is running as I write this. You'll love the quality from a 4000 ppi scan, but be sure you're not throwing away $100 on this deal. It may be too good to be true. Michael H. Cothran

Well, according to their website, they use a Nikon Supercool Scan 5000 ED, and this is the price quoted for this quantity. (A few dollars over, actually, depending if you want CD's or DVD's) They do have a 35% off winter special right now. It would also be considerably more expensive at any lesser amount-- 50 slides would run about $75.00. And they do use the archival Verbatim CD's/DVD's. Has anyone reading this used this service, by any chance?
