What are the different formats for?

How do I find out about the different formats like TIFF, JPEG, BMP or PING etc and which format is best to be used for digital photographing (Olympus D-510Z) and then for e-mailing images, etc.

Not trying to cop out on you, but the best and most thorough discussion on this is at scantips.com. Briefly, TIF is for storing and printing full size picture files. JPEG is a special tool for compressing a digital image to send via e-mail or to post on the web. COnvert an image to BMP to use as wallpaper on your Windows desktop.
