How to Clean 35mm slides

I have thousands of slides taken over the years and would like to preserve many of them as scans. They have been stored in archive-friendly plastic sleeves in a secluded closet, but still have dust particles. Is there a safe way for me to knock the dust off without harming them? Can I put a dab of lens cleaner on a Q-tip, or will that just make it worse? Thanks for any help.

Try brushing them lightly with a DRY Q-tip. Brush in one direction ... toward the darkest part of the image. Then give each side a blast with a can of compressed air to remove whatever residual hairs the brushing may have left. It also helps to have some sort of software clean-up program, such as Digital ICE, to get the specs you missed.
