Jen, while college is terrific for a lot of things, attending one does not guarantee you will gain the skills required to do something as specific as portrait photography. There are some photo schools at which you can learn the craft side of the business - lighting, composition, how to actually run the business, etc. So you don't need to go to college to learn those things. But portrait shooting is more than just knowing how to focus and watch for distracting explosions in the background - it has to do with connecting with your subjects, making them feel less self-conscious in front of the camera, and in general being able to work with people (unless you're talking about pet portrature) well.

Hello Jen, Short answer? Nope..Not at all. Some of the top portrait shooters in the world never took a photo course. Some basic schooling or course work is obviously helpful, but not mandatory. I'll echo Bob's comments. Now, to be a well paid portrait shooter is another story all together. This aspect of the business is just that; BUSINESS!..and (this) is probably the number reason most good photographers who desire to earn a living, or just supplement their income usually fail. A business curriculum is worth it's weight in gold if you seek to earn money in this craft. All the best, Pete
