Need tips for Food Photography
Hi all. I've recently been hired by a colleague to photograph some food items (mostly bundt cakes) for his business. The pictures would be shown on a website and in brochures.I was wondering if anyone had any advice (particularly lighting, but anything helps) specific to food photography, since I've never photographed food. Right now I'm thinking about approaching it the way I do portraits-- late afternoon soft natural light, 45 degrees. I use a Canon Digital Rebel, and I have a tripod and remote release... I don't have a lighting setup and can't afford one right now, though, so keep in mind that I'll be working with natural light. Thanks in advance for your help! Nancy

I just doen a food shoot,We set up some very flash meals on a nice table with cloth wine and cutlery?I sot at 45 degree, and higher and lower, same a s portrait zoom end of lens, then crop in photoshop if req, food books usually like th e food really close, and blurred background, showing only the food, dont worry about the plate?as for lighting and tripod,no need for tripod, and a standard flash ex420? will be great if not the camera flash is good for this. nick.

Natural light is good,...as long as it's diffused and there are no shadows. You should shoot on an angle which appears to the viewer that he or she is sitting at the table ready to eat. Definately use your tripod and cable-release (or timer) to insure the sharpest possible images. Props will help to accentuate the product and, as mentioned, they should be slightly out of focus to draw the viewers attention to the "main course". When placing table settings as props, be sure to follow proper etiquitte...i.e., fork to the left, teaspoon to the right...etc. Someone with nothing better to do will surely point this out if it's wrong.

Thank you so very much for the tips, Nick and Bob! You've given me some good stuff to think about. Bob, thanks for the reminder about props... I need to read up about that. (: Nancy
