Portrait Lens Advise??

I have a Minolta Maxxum 5 camera. I currently have two lenses which are both Sigma lenses and they came with the camera as a package deal. They are a 28-80 and 70-300. Both have the macro option at the 80 and 200-300 settings. My question is? Will either of these work for portraits if I'm in the 85-135mm range? or should I get a separate lense specifically in that range and is this possible? In looking at ritz camera online I didn't specifically see a 85-135 range. Thanks Michelle

Just guessing, but I suspect the 28-80 has minimum aperture of f/5.6 at 80mm, while the 70-300 is f/4 in the 70-100 range. Typically you'd prefer the larger f/4 aperture for portraits for less depth of field. Try 'em both and use the one that gives better results (I'm guessing it'll be the 70-300).

Oops. "minimum aperture" above should have been "maximum aperture".

Thanks for your responses. Okay if I use the 70-300 will I get the distorted sizes of the head . . . ex. if two children are in the photograph with one slightly positioned in front of the other will their heads be proportionate. I don't want any distortion. . . any better suggestions for a portrait lens???

  Hi Michelle!
Check out:
www.bhphotovideo.com or
www.keh.com.
Both offer an extensive used equipment department!
I would consider a 28-300mm lens to cover a wide range of coverage.
If your budget allows, consider a 50mm prime lens!

Shoot at 90 mm and focus on the eyes. If your subject face is "pointed off of the lens axis," be sure to focus on the eye farthest away.

I want to piggyback on Michelle's question. I have the same lenses but I'm not sure what focal length to use to take a nice head shot. Is 85mm going to give me head & shoulders? Will 135mm be too close? How close should I stand while taking the picture?
