Hi Tom, I'm ishak I assume u shooting outdoor in the open. When u shoot outdoor , u compose in the viewfinder and meter and set for the highlights. - This only applies on overcast sky. Otherwise u average. If u have the ae finder I guess it's automatic-aperture priority. With waist level finder, meter using any 35mm camera with the same lens as 6X7 format or a spot meter. Once u know ur ambient ev, set 1 stop below or equal to ur ambience, whichever ur preference. I usually used a flashmeter to read thef flash output in manual mode to compare the ambience reading and the flash reading. Without flashmeter u can also set the flash in auto mode and find the same fstop range recommended by the flash with the one recommended by the ambient reading. U can work very fast when u know the trick. It's only difficult when u the sun is too strong and when u flash cannot overpower it. Best used during overcast days. Try this yourself.
