spotmatic II vs fujica st605 I'm buying my first 35mm slr. I have a Minolta Dimage A5. I like the older classic manual cameras. Would you recommend the Pentax Spotmatic II or the Fujica ST605? I like taking pictures of all types of subjects. Thanks, Heather

Download the Pentax Spotmatic II manual http://www.pentaxusa.com. You can view the Fujica ST605 manual online http://www.butkus.org/chinon/fujica_st605n/fujica_st605n.htm. Both are about as "old school" as can be. While they have built in light meters, there is no automation. The lens diaphram remains wide open for focusing, regardless of the aperture selected, but to meter a button is pressed that closes the diaphram down to taking aperture (stop-down metering). Both cameras uses lenses in the "universal" Pentax screw mount (aka M-42 or 42x1 screw threads). I'm not aware of any company making modern lens designs in this mount, you'll have to shop exclusively for used. Many companies made lenses in this mount besides Pentax. The Spotmatic's meter requires 1.3v mercury batteries that are no longer available in many areas, but there are substitues, or you can use a separate meter since the lens and shutter operation does not require the battery. The Fujica's meter uses readily available 1.5v silver oxide cells.
