Photography Question

What is the difference between: ?

I am interrested in buying the Canon Elan 7ne, but am not sure if I should go with a kit that includes the body and a 28-105ft 3.5-4.5 USM lens or not. Should I go MF or AF and what is the difference between a USM a non-USM? And which one will be best to buy?

Like anything else, the lens that comes with the camera in a kit is usually rather weak compared to others, especially in Canon's selection of lenses. The 28-105 may take soft pictures with low contrast and saturation, and as you can see it has a rather large maximum aperture. Autofocus Canon lenses can be switched to manual focus if you'd like, so buy AF for the convenience and you will still have the option of MF. USM stands for UltraSonic Motor and it is the motor that drives the AF, as opposed to the older non-USM regular motors. Basically, the sound a USM motor makes is very high, into the ultrasonic range so it is amazingly quiet during AF. A non-USM motor will make that typical irritating grind. I don't know the specifics.

Thanks, so what lens should I buy then? I want to keep the camara and it's lenses for quite some time and don't want to buy something that I will have to replace at a later stage.

Well, that's really up to you. Don't exclude the 28-105 you mentioned entirely. It's not terrible. Plus, if you really want a great Canon lens it will undoubtedly be a very costly investment. Fred Miranda has good reviews.
