how to takes a blur-free picture of moving subject

When I take pictures with my digital camera I get a blur if anything in the picture moves. It doesn't matter if they are in the background or foreground, any part of the picture that moves turns out to be one big blur. I've tried different combinations with film and settings and can't come up with the proper setting to stop this. Any ideas out there? Thanks

The cause and remedies are dependent on your specific camera model and the settings you're currently using.

Very generally, if the background is fine and only a moving subject is blurred, then you need to use a higher shutter speed.
