Thanks Jim. I usually put a few resubs each month, which are my own faves and in my humble opinion needs another look by the Judges. The idea of entering ONLY fresh images is fine for the three months, but I do hope it does not become a norm for the contest. And yes, it will definitely nudge me to shoot fresh images or to go dig my archive of images which have never been posted at BP. Usman.

As I see it, this new rule means not only no resubs; but no photos taken any time except in the current month. So, if I just learned about this and wanted to enter something today (June 1st), I need to shoot it, edit it if needed, and enter it today. The same rule would apply to every month, so the first days of each month pose some quite severe restrictions on what can count in the contest. I suspect that would reduce the number of contest entries considerably.

I'm also not a fan of the idea. I'm trying to do new stuff and older things I have been holding onto for one reason or another. I agree with Usman, sometimes resubmits need another look, since many times they got somehow overlooked the first time around.

I read this new rule the same as Wally - must be shot in the month in which it is submitted. This would obviously make the beginning of each month problematic. In addition, it greatly restricts the photographer. For example, I was on a trip in May (returning on the 15th) where I made lots of photographs that I intended to submit to the contest. According to this new rule, I can't do that. My plan had been to submit the trip images along with new summer images as I get out to shoot. Needless to say, I'm not happy with the new rule as I read it.

There is much I could say about the rule, but I'll only make a couple of points. I want to say first and foremost my comments are not about my personal feelings regarding my shooting or contest entering. It's about the viability of the site. I think we can agree that we have far less submitting members than in the past. Entries for contests have gone from 20,000 to under 5,000. And that 5,000 includes up to 10 or maybe unlimited entries by some members while that 20,000 was when only 1 a day was allowed. I suspect if people follow the rule, there will be far less entries. Also this was the "law of the land" a couple of years ago and was repealed. Did it not produce what they wanted it to or did it produce some unintended negative results. For some reason it got repealed. I think this idea might work if we had a category devoted to it. Perhaps if results and feelings were amazing it could then be applied site-wide. My recommendation is to try it as the theme for the summer and see how it works and how people feel. Then decide about site-wide.

Interesting: I was clicking on several of the images on the "Recent Contest Entries" page, and saw that the first 4 I clicked on had NO EXIF info given. Also, I saw about 4 landscape entries by one member that could not have possibly all been shot TODAY. So, either he did not get "the memo" or several of his "entries" for today SHOULD BE excluded---per the new "law of the land."

Some filters you use make the exif data disappear. I went through my entries I have ready to upload for the month (I set up ahead of time) and don't have any that have been previously uploaded, but were probably actually shot last month. I'm assuming that's ok, since they hadn't been uploaded yet, and are "new" to the site, and recently shot.

I think what Jim wants is new to the site and not something that has been posted before. I don't think you have to shoot the month you enter but I guess he hopes many will be shot in the contest month. The difficulty with rules is they need to be interpreted and enforced. Unlike many other sites BP has not made the contests complicated with rules.

I hadn't been active as a member at BP for over 6 years, but the "All Time" 20th Anniversary Contest notifications that I got put me back into the habit of choosing and editing photos and entering them on a usually-daily basis. I have 6 years worth of photos that I have not entered, some of which I'd really like to. So, when I got the email from "Jim" about the "new rule" for June, July and August contests, I was disheartened. IF what I read in the email is enforced: "For June, July and August, I want to see NEW photos being submitted. If the judges see that the photo was uploaded before this month, or recognize the photo (because they've seen it several times before), or otherwise know the photo is old (from EXIF data etc), they will exclude it." It's the last part that bothers me: "..,or otherwise know the photo is old, they will exclude it." Obviously, one won't know if an image has been excluded from the contest. Some images just don't get EPs. None of the images I intended to enter have ever been seen on this site---which I thought was part of the reason why the new rule was enacted: because Jim wanted "to see new photos being submitted." Anyway, just my 2 cents worth. (I will still probably enter "old" photos which I have never submitted, and remove the EXIF information. They will still be NEW photos to BP.)

Jim, I understand that you want us to get out more and shoot and practice more, which is just fine and understandable, and actually IMHO its one of the best ways to improve our imagery. However, I also agree with most all of the above comments and humbly request you to please ease the proposed rule (i.e., qualified images will ONLY be among the ones which are captured in the same month in which they are entered in the contest) to ONLY disallowing resubs (images that have been entered in the contest during any of the prior months) for the next 3 months. I think that should mostly serve the purpose of seeing 'fresh' images. It will allow many of us to enter ONLY new images which might have been shot earlier but never entered in any monthly contest at BP. Hope it is not too much to ask! UB.

Right on, Usman. I think that would be the way to go, if Jim agrees, considering Melinda's post, also. Many of us are limited in how often we can get out and about to shoot, myself included. Good health and mobility isn't guaranteed in the older population. Most of us have backlogs of photos that have not been submitted, and this should suffice to qualify under the intended purpose of Jim's idea.

Agree with everyone on this. If the intent is to have a renewed emphasis on new photos, then simply don't allow resubmits. But I remember all the angst awhile back, when resubmits weren't allowed. Or, maybe a compromise would be to have one specific category each month, to only be "new" photos (not resubmitted). But that would have its pros/cons. In looking at the "Recent Entries" page, at least 20% are resubs. Thanks, Jim for at least considering options.

I am asking this question here as well as on the thread I started. Here's the scenario. What if I go through some old photos from a trip (I take literally thousands) and discover one I overlooked. It has never been on BP before. Then I process it, upload it, and enter it into the contest. Is this "new"? Just wondering because I do discover some good ones every now and then.

Jim sent out another memo stating that they should be shot within the last 60 days, unless, like Melinda and some of the rest of us, there are mobile or health issues, then you should let support know and they will make some adjustments where you are concerned. That should clear it up.

I hope this is not permanent because it would be sad it a winner is discovered and not eligible because of time frames. I had a shot of Venice that I discovered while looking through a trip taken last year. I processed it and it won Gold. What if I could never have entered this photo? I wish it would be limited to photos entered in prior contests. Three months I could live with but it would be hard if it was a permanent thing. Thanks for the input Carolyn.
