Fill Flash
How do I use fill flash with a simple manuel flash unit?

Your manual flash should have a distance scale on it for what f-stop to use at a certain distance. Simply close down your aperture from one to two f-stops from what your scale indicates to obtain a "fill." Note - you will also need to adjust your shutter speed when stopping down your lens, to be sure your ambient light is not affected by closing down your lens one or two stops. Remember this adage - when using flash and ambient light together, control the flash with your f-stop, and the ambient with your shutter speed.
