If by format you mean one of the digital image formats, then I would work only in the TIF mode until I need JPEG to send an image. I have a feeling you mean something else by format, maybe the type of scanner to use. If you want a scanner that does everything, a flatbed such as the HP 5700 or the new Epson 2450 will scan prints, 35-mm negatives, and medium format negatives.

thanks doug. by format I meant exactly the same what you understood i.e. digital format. I knew that TIFF is good if uncompressed. but what about a bit map (BMP) or some other formats. is TIFF as good enough so that in future I can play with the images, modify them according to my need, and all sorts of stuff done with a digital image. the point is I don't want to loose any quality when I modify the picture, if the modification itself doesn't harm it. for this TIFF should be fine, I guess, according to your reply.

Wayne Fulton at scantips.com addresses the different formats as well as anyone. You might consider buying his book from the web site, as it will be a handy reference for your digital darkroom.
