That's what NASA calls this Super Guppie. Jeff Robinson can probably tell us more about this plane. I shot this one a few miles South of Nasa.

Fantastic capture of this unique air vehicle Bob! NASA had converted a couple of these back in the 1960s from C-97/KC-97 aircraft. They were used to haul large items for a variety of Space Programs such as Sky Lab and Space Shuttle. I used to see these aircraft a lot at the Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB CA in the 1980s. The Guppy was used to transport the tail cone, a structural cover that was mounted over the Space Shuttles engines that allowed the vehicle to be more aerodynamic when flying on top of the NASA 747. It increased fuel efficiency/gas mileage tremendously and made for a much smoother ride for the crew. After a Space Shuttle landing in the Mojave Desert (Edwards AFB CA) they needed to return the Shuttle to The Cape in Florida for the next mission. In addition to heavy/over-sized cargo the Guppy hauled Space Shuttle engineers/technicians and their special equipment between California and the Space Coast!

Thanks all for your comments and a big thanks to Jeff for the info. This was a lucky camera ready moment. I was shooting wildlife in a park a few miles from NASA when this slow moving beauty flew over.

Amazing capture and info, Bob and Jeff. Very unusual shape, it does look like a flying Whale.
