Hi Ellen,
You've done a great job from the original and yes a reflector held by the subject in this type of shot would work wonders, but you did it justice by shooting in raw editing the exposure/lightning there.
I am very rusty both in my photography and editing and commenting, so forgive me as I ease back into Phellos after just about a year in my black hole!
