My primary interest has been in nature photography stemming from an early interest in the outdoors and the natural world. I'm trying to broaden my interests into other areas such as landscapes, architecture and abstraction. I view photography as a form of artistic expression and love to create beautiful images. I prefer natural lighting and generally use color film, although I'm starting to become re-interested in black and white. I particularly enjoy close-up work for nature photography. I've been using a 35 mm SLR but am becoming more interested in digital imaging as it improves.

I currently live near Durham, NC, with my wife and miniature poodle and work full time for a local research organization. My interest in photography began over a half century ago upon receiving my 1st camera, a small Kodak 620 which I still own, although film for it is no longer available. To capture a pictorial moment in time seemed magical. My initial photographs were of flora and fauna near my rural home. I never had the means for it to be more than a part-time hobby though and subsequently used my camera mainly to record family events. At some point I became acquainted with and inspired by the work of the masters like Weston, Adams, Porter and others, and realized that this was an accessible means of expression for my artistic temperament which my limited drawing and painting skills didn't permit. I acquired my present camera, a Canon AE1 SLR, some 15 years ago and have been trying to improve ever since, mainly by reading and practice, since I've never taken any formal photography courses. I've learned much but realize there is a lot more to learn. I'm always trying to take better photos, and, like Imogen Cunningham, feel that my best one is yet to be taken. I've always enjoyed sharing my images with others, and if I thought this could ever evolve into more than a hobby, I would embrace that goal enthusiastically. I have sold my entry in the members' exhibit at the Durham Art Guild the past two summers, which is very encouraging. I find looking at the work of the many fine photographers on this site very inspirational and a strong incentive to keep trying to improve. I also welcome the camaraderie and encouragement I find here.
