Early Departure #1

Uploaded: August 16, 2011

Description

These trumpeter swans raise new babies every year in a small pond about a quarter mile upstream from the location in this photo. The pond is too small to learn how to fly so when the cygnets are mature enough they take them across the highway to the Lowe River. They float the river to the bay about 7 miles away and feed in the tide flats while the cygnets go to flight school. This year they left far earlier than normal. The cygnets are obviously not ready to fly. I suspect it is because the pond is getting smaller every year and they probably ran out of food. It's a nasty, swift river. I sure hope these little guys make the trip OK!
