PHOTOGRAPHIC HAPPENINGS ON THE WEB

Active Buyer's Guide
When you are searching for the perfect digital camera, point & shoot,
or scanner, this buyer's tool may be a worthy resource. It asks you a
series of questions about various features to help you narrow your
choices. The only drawback is that you have to know a bit about the
art first. If you know what the terms mean or are willing to spend
the time to learn them, this could save you during the gift-gifting
season:

Jeromepix.com
See what you can do with a camera when you really put your mind to it.
This photographer's Web site reflects the form and function of her work
beautifully in a very cool portfolio site. With clients such as Kate
Winslet, Beck, Cameron Diaz, this shooter is making it happen!
Check out the site to have fun or be inspired:

Kodak's latest feature
The big site has another cool feature story about a photographer exploring
new ideas. This installment shows how Matthew Frondorf spent six days
driving across the country with a camera hooked up to his car's odometer
so that a picture would be automatically snapped every mile of the
way.
What is the photo becoming in our culture?

THIS WEEK'S TIP
~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are with family or friends this week and you feel like
sharing your photos, go for it! If you want to have the most
effect, though, edit your work before showing it off. It is so
simple and yet incredible effective. Sifting through albums
and boxes of mediocre shots as you make excuses just
doesn't make a good impression. Presenting just a few
of your best shots makes you look like a photog genius.
Image plays a big part when it comes to valuing photographs.
CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHY Q&A
~~~~~~~~~~~
---Continuing---
Q. <<Are there any digital cameras that can be operated
remotely from a tripod with a cable? If so, can these
cameras also power a lighting system to flash?>>
A. I did recently read that the Olympus C2000 can be triggered
with an electronic remote. The RM-1 Remote Control is included
with this awesome camera:

------New------
Q. My husband wants to buy me a new camera as a present.
We have discussed classes for photography and I might take
them next year. What camera would give me the best of both
worlds? Are there cameras with auto focus and, if I do well in
my studies, allow manual operation for more interesting pictures?
A. I'm in the same situation. I wanted to jump into photography,
but I also wanted to learn it to it's fullest. Being on a limited
budget, I searched on my own and with the help of friends and
found the Canon Rebel 2000 to be the best choice for me.
It has seven automatic modes or you can manually set shutter
speed, aperture priority, manual exposure; it has automatic
depth of field, multiple exposures, bulb exposure, and you can
select ISO film speed. I feel also that for price the focus of the
lens can't be beat. I hope this ranting answers your question.
-Stan
It does indeed help... it is good to know how much the
Rebel is capable of. This is a great beginners camera
because it inspires you to experiment and learn while
giving you beautiful photos right from the start.

Q. Which camera should I buy? Canon EOS 5, EOS 50, Nikon
FM2, F70 or something else?
A. If you're just new to SLRs, I'd definitely go for the 50. An EOS 5
is obviously the better Canon of the 2, but I find the 50 will keep
you learning for quite a while. I have had no experience with the
FM2, but one of my good friend's has an F70 and I (& several
other people) find the interface very difficult to use. (The F90 is
a better option here). The Nikon can take 'older' lenses, but that's
about the only positive I can think of.
Personally, I have a 50E and it is GREAT !!!!

Q. I am interested in nature photography. I don't care about
bells & whistles, where the date stamp goes, just the quality
of the output. What features are important in evaluating which
camera will help the most in producing the best pictures?
A. One question first, why use a date stamp? The first thing
to look for is a camera that allows you to adjust everything,
as well as functions fully automatically. Even if you're new to
photography you will rapidly want to adjust exposure and f-stop.
Before long you'll want to lie to the camera and set film speed
to get unprecedented after dark pictures. The next thing to look
for is sharpness of focus. You'll have to rely heavily on opinions
as well as others experience. Since I am a firm believer in the
Canon Rebel 2000 I would tell you to keep it heavily in mind.

Q. Hi, my name is Zoe. For Christmas 2000, I would like a
camera. I am the age of 11. I am not sure what type of
camera I should purchase. I will have the total amount of
$200.00. Which type do you think I should buy?
A. For two hundred dollars, you can get a nice point & shoot
camera such as:
Fuji Discovery 290S Zoom Camera
http://www.betterphoto.com/reviews/reviewItemDetail.asp?reviewItemID=572
Yashica T-4 Super
http://www.betterphoto.com/reviews/reviewItemDetail.asp?reviewItemID=584
Olympus Stylus Zoom 115 Camera
http://www.betterphoto.com/reviews/reviewItemDetail.asp?reviewItemID=579
My favorites are the Elph Jr. APS Camera and the Elph Sport APS Camera,
which you can use this one underwater and everywhere.
I like the easy APS format and find the picture quality excellent for
such a tiny camera.
