THIS WEEK'S TIP
~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever try to photograph a pet? Then you know that it can be one
of the toughest assignments. Quick trick: place small dogs and
cats on a table to temporarily get them to sit still. If they still prove
too restless, have a friend help distract and keep their attention
while you set up and shoot those priceless portraits.
CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHY Q&A
~~~~~~~~~~~
------CONTINUING Q&A--------
Q. Best Camera to Buy for Class:
<<Looking for an easy 35mm SLR for B/W or digital work, for
$300-$350>>
A. The Pentax ZX-50 QD SLR with Zoom Lens is fast and furious:
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=392
Nikon's N60 will cost just a bit more but features cool qualities:
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=390
If you do not want autofocus and can live with a used model, you have
many choices at either KEH Camera Brokers or your local shop.
http://www.camerabroker.com/
To go digital, couple any of these cameras with a good film scanner
like the Nikon LS-2000:

or the Polaroid SprintScan 4000
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=410

Q. Filters and Film for the Last Frontier:
<<Like to know if warm filters would be necessary on trip to
Alaska; also types of film to use.>>
You will get the most enjoyment out of your polarizing filter
but it may add to the fun to try the other filters out. I wouldn't
think too much about it - this often leads into a black hole that
keeps photographers fiddling with filters instead of shooting.
Filters are not magic wands.
As far as film goes, Kodak has a very nice, warm slide film,
the Ektachrome E100SW. For prints, I recommend Fuji's
Fujicolor Superia 100 or Kodak's Gold 100 (4-Pack).
Buy Ektachrome E100SW: (5 pack of 36)
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=472
Buy Fujicolor Superia 100 ($4.20 for 1 roll of 36)
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=300
Buy Kodak's Gold 100 (4 rolls of 24)

------NEW Q&A-------
Q. Are digital cameras compatible with WebTV for entering
in a JPEG form?
A. Yes. Many digital cameras offer the feature of saving images
in a JPEG format. And if they don't, numerous programs will
convert your file. Once in JPEG format, you can make a Web
page with your images in it to display via WebTV.
You can also find a few digital cameras that feature a video
out port; you can simply hook your camera up to your TV to
display images, if this kind of TV slide show is your primary goal.

Q. My wife, who has less experience than I, would like to get a
camera that takes great pictures (auto w/manual override)...
This would be a Christmas present from me. She will, if the
classes help, become a photo enthusiast, in my opinion.
A. This does require careful thought. Buying someone a
camera is almost as risky as buying someone a musical
instrument. You have to become an observant, thoughtful
detective - weighing all the factors.
Here are three great cameras that take excellent pictures
and feature manual override:
The Nikon N60 Camera with Zoom Lens
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=390
Minolta 800si SLR Camera Body
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=459
Canon Elan II with Zoom Lens
http://www.betterphoto.com/product/productDetail.asp?productID=238
I like the Canon because it is very easy and user-friendly.
However, you know your wife best; if she has ever used a
Nikon or Minolta in the past, she will surely have an opinion
on them. Take this information into account, if it is available.
If she has no camera history, any of the three above cameras
will be sure winners.
Hope she enjoys!
