Edinburgh's Stevenson College Exposed Exhibition 2000
The students of Edinburgh's Stevenson College are producing a show
entitled the Exposed Exhibition 2000, to be held at Edinburgh's Queens
Hall between April 26th - May 27th. This yearly event will for the first
time be presented on the internet with assistance provided by the

PHOTO TRIVIA QUESTION OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer to Last Week's Trivia
Last week, we asked what was the photo most often requested from
National Archives. That would be a picture of Elvis Presley meeting
Richard Nixon to help against the "growing drug problem." On
December 21, 1970, The King hand-delivered a letter expressing his
deep concern and his interest in meeting the President to discuss
helping out as a "Federal Agent at Large."
He was granted the meeting and given a badge as a special agent for
the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. He also presented
Nixon with a gift - a World War II-era Colt 45.
Was the King battling his own drug addiction and trying to do the right
thing? Even with great photos documenting the event, many questions
arise about motivations and character.
And Now... This Week's Question
What did early students of forensics hope to see by photographing
the eyes of murder victims?
PHOTO WORKSHOP
A Week in Provence: July 17- July 22, 2000
Photographers of all levels can enjoy spending six days touring southern
France, learning: the use of 35mm, medium or large format cameras;
how to work under various natural lighting conditions - interior and
exterior; the use of tungsten and electronic flash. Seminars will be held
in the morning with regional visits and shooting opportunities in the
afternoon. Sounds nice, doesn't it?
THIS WEEK'S TIP
~~~~~~~~~~~
Packing It The Right Way!
Keep a couple things in mind when setting yourself up with a camera bag.
First & foremost, do your best to keep your pack from looking like a
camera bag. The more obvious it is that you have an expensive camera
on-broad, the more likely you will be targeted by a thief. Second, you may
want to get a backpack instead of a shoulder bag, especially if you have
multiple lenses, a flash, etc. You will find the balanced weight
distribution a big advantage in the long haul.

CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHY Q&A
~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. Macro Lens
What are macro lens for?
- Kaye
A. A macro lens enables the photographer to get especially close to a
subject. The close-up pictures you see of flowers, frogs, bugs, etc. are
often shot with a macro lens.
Macro lens come in different ratios; a 1:1 macro means that the subject is
as big on the negative or slide as it is in real life. That's big and yet
many macro lenses allow you to magnify the subject even more!
Some cameras also offer a macro mode which performs the same function -
allowing the user to get real close to the subject.
Q. Film Speed: Slower Is Not Necessarily Better
Does it make any sense to shoot with a lower speed color negative film if
the higher speed film is just as sharp?
- David
A. No - if both the color and the sharpness are acceptable to you, then
there is no reason to hold back. Just remember that you may someday
want enlargements bigger than your usual size; so order a test print or
two at 8 x 10 or so to see how the grain and color reproduces at the
larger size.
Q. Copying Prints with Slide Film
I am trying to photograph 4" x 6" photographs with slide film for a
small high school booster club sports banquet. I am using a Canon AE 1
with a 135 mm lens and a +1 magnifying filter attachment on tripod. I
can get the picture centered in the viewfinder, but I am having trouble
with the lighting. I have tried direct sunlight, incandescent light,
fluorescent light, and flash. The pictures come out darker than the
originals or washed out. I understand that this is how a photo lab
would create slides from photographs. Can you offer some tips on
lighting? I do not have much time and any help or direction would be
greatly appreciated.
