CNET Recommends MGI PhotoSuite III & Microsoft Picture It 2000
CNET took a good look at six photo editing programs and found two excellent
applications that work for digital imaging beginners as well as experienced
pros. "MGI's PhotoSuite III Platinum is the best all-around editor, thanks
to its beefy Web tools, and Microsoft's Picture It 2000 will get any new
photographer off on the right track." Check it out:

PHOTO TRIVIA QUESTION OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer to Last Week's Trivia:
Last week, we asked which famous singer once photographed a
boxer and had the image published on the cover of Life magazine?
The crooner with camera was Frank Sinatra; the shot was of Joe
Frazier pounding Ali; and the date in Life was March 19, 1971.
And Now... This Week's Question
What is the photo most often requested from National Archives?
Hint: one of the people in the photograph is a King so famous that
the U.S. Patent Office has a FAQ on their Web site regarding
patenting sightings of him. Answer coming next week...
THIS WEEK'S TIP
~~~~~~~~~~~
The Mode That Works Best in Photoshop
When you open a GIF (or other indexed-color image) in Photoshop for a little
revision, your first step should be to turn it into an RGB image. Do this by
simply selecting RGB from the Image: Mode Menu. The RGB mode handles type,
line, and color changes with a much higher level of quality. When you are
done, you can change the image mode back to an indexed color palette and
then export your new GIF.

CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHY Q&A
~~~~~~~~~~~
Q. Difference Between Aperture Settings
Is there a lot of difference if a lens aperture is set to f2 as compared to
f4?
-Shahreen
A. Not too much difference if you are doing landscape photography. The
difference is most notable in close up photography (i.e. macro) where a
depth-of-field of a few inches can make a huge difference in the outcome of
the image.
Q. Wearing Glasses and Focusing
If I wear glasses for close-up work (to read), should I also wear glasses
when I'm focusing a camera?
-Fred
A. My thought is that if you use a manual focus SLR camera and have
difficulty reading the focus indicator, use corrective lenses. However,
farsighted people with a WYSIWYG camera (one that shows you the level of
focus in the viewfinder) should be able to focus by looking at the objects
in the distance. Nearsighted people will find it helpful to use autofocus
cameras, contact lenses, or corrective viewfinders.
Q. Are Your Images Being Used Without Your Knowing?
If you have any images posted online, you may want to know that there are
sites out there that search the Web, grabbing images for others to use for
free. One claims innocence by saying that they are merely indexing the Web
and referring image-seekers to the original source. Since most people will
take and use an image without looking twice to see who it belongs to, this
is most likely exploiting photographers by giving away their images without
them even knowing about it. Let me know what you think.
