Good camera with many features that a beginning amateur would benefit from. Decent pixel size at 6.1. Captures great details with Macro lens. Good functionality with different modes - allowing those with no experience to capture great photos in one of the auto modes, or allowing flexibility in one of the 4 non-100% auto modes to be more creative. Many ISO options, white balance & easy to manipulate menus make this a fun camera to learn on.

Until I recently began using the RAW format with the trial Nikon Capture software, the real potential of this camera was only partially realized. Color saturation and sharpness (to name but a few) attributes come to life with the large files created in RAW. I'm looking forward to trying out extension tubes with my F lenses for macro work, which is actually pretty good at 70 mm on the "kit" lens, another real plus to the outfit. The light meter, flash and autofocus are first rate. The menu helps bring out the artist (along with the all important software with this camera especially) in the photographer.

I have been using this camera not quite a year now and I have been very happy so far. I am really not familiar with any other digital cameras so don't really have anything to compare it to. Up until I bought this camera I had always used a film SLR. The only thing that I wish was better is the LCD monitor to me is a little small but like I say this is the very first experience with a digital SLR.

Used to use a Coolpix 4300 but could not set shutter speed and aperture. Nice to be able to use all my Nikkor lenses that I used with my F100 Nikon but not have to pay for film and processing all the time while I'm learning.

Works great, fast, easy to figure out, takes great pictures. I don't like compact flash cards, too easy to bend a pin.

There are dog people and cat people, Elvis people and Beatles people, and Nikon and Canon people. There is a difference in how the two capture colors and texture. Both are good, it just comes down to personal preference. There are times I look at a shot and think , I wish I shot that with a Canon. Then there are other times that I love what I got. Bottom line is that I love my camera, wouldn't trade it for the world, but there are always times that I admire the other side.

Ok, So after 5 years of shooting on my Sony Mavica, (which is an awsome camera) I have myself a brand spanking new Nikon D70s...... This camera has been great for me, from the time that I have picked it up, I have not stopped learning how to take better photos. I already have several lenses from my other Nikon SLR Camers, (N-60, N-90). So the move over to a digital SLR was pretty much without a hitch. I would highly recommend, the D70s for even the beginer photogrpher, its so user friendly, and easy to use, from pre set program functions to total manual... it has it all. mike

For what I want at the moment and for an entry level camera into Digital Photography I couldn't ask for a better camera. I love the versatility of the D70s and the way it feels in the hands. It actually feels like Im holding something in my hands. My only dissapointment for the camera would be the restriction of the 6.1 magapixels. However if I ever manage to get paid for it then I would upgrade to a better one. All round though it is an excellent camera.

I recently started using the D70s and I love its flexibility. It's easy to use with features easily accessible. One doesn't have to keep going back to the menu to adjust every small setting. True, the D2X and the D200 are classified by the manufacturer as better and more advanced cameras but the main point where the D70s scores over them is the battery life which is close to double that of the D200. The manual says that at average settings, the D70s shoots about 2500 frames. While almost no one would use settings that low, even with better settings and an almost constant use of AF and the built in speedlight, one could easily shoot 800 frames in a single charge. The only reason i've rated it 4.5 is because of the fact that one can't shoot TIFF images with it (or atleast i haven't come across the settings in the instruction manual) and RAW(NEF) is too problematic a format for someone like me.

My husband has been trying to get me to go digital for a while but I wasn't sure if I wanted to. Then I decided what the heck and purchased the NikonD70S Digital SLR and love it. I really love the fact that after I take the picture, I can look at it and see if I like it or not. My husband still likes his digital where he can use the view screen on back to set up and take his picture. Even though you can't do that on the Nike 70DS, I like the fact that you can still look through the viewfinder to set up and take the picture. I had a hard time when I used my husband's and just relied on the screen to set up and take pictures. I recommend the Nikon DS70 to anyone who wants to go digital. I especially love that my husband and I can use all of our Nikon lenses with my new camera. I am having a blast taking pictures and playing with them on my computer and learning how to work in Photoshop7 with my pictures. I look forward to a long time of fun taking pictures.

Actually is my Dad's camera but i've used it a lot. Don't really like all the fumbling around in menus to get the right settings but all in all it takes a nice picture and that's what's important.

While not quite up to the standards of the D2X or the D200, the D70s is certainly the best digital camera I have ever used. After a rather short learning curve, the pictures amaze all who view them - like those in National Geographic! Image quality is certainly it's hallmark, with features galore - too many, in fact, to remember!

This is a jump up for me to a digital SLR - haven't used it much yet and the learning curve is steep. When I get it right the quality of the photo is awesome! The handbook that comes with it is not very useful - come on Nikon this is big dollars for amateurs - a training DVD makes sense!

A great little camera, records beautifully, easy to read. The only thing I don't like about this camera is the way the photo labs have total control over the printing. However, I'm glad I learned how to photograph with a film camera, where aperture, metering and exposure must be correct.

I love my Nikon D70 it is easy to use, takes wonderful pictures, allows me to have the creativity that I want and yet can be set to automatic at any time. It is fast so I don't miss any action shots (with three children that is important), and I can also slow down and take the macro shots that I want as well. Love it!!

It has improved my photography immeasurably. And its so economical to use. I take 10 times the photos, now as I don't have to woory about developing cost.

I really can't seem to shoot anything over 320 without a substantial amount of grain. Other than that I am very happy with my purchase of this camera.

I just got my Nikon D70s during the last part of 2005. I have numerous digital point and shoot cameras...most notably, a Canon G3 and a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and I have gotten terrific results and years of use from these instruments. Although I have been shooting SLR (Nikon N90s) for years, this is my first Digital SLR. The added versatility and ability to interchange lenses has enhanced my digital photographic experience. I have upgraded to CS2 and am really enjoying this jump in 'level". I do much of my own printing in large layouts (11x14, 12x18 and larger) and am very impressed with the clarity of color and detail. The learning curve can be long, as there are lots of features. But, you can fall back on Auto Mode in the meantime with great results. I also am pleased with the weight and hand feel of the camera. Priced well, this is a good transitional entry into the digital SLR world.

This is the best camera I've ever had--so far. The images are sharp and it has enabled me to play around with different settings--aperture, shutter speed, etc. and see instant results instead of having to wait for a roll of film to come back.

This a brilliant camera for beginners. It has done a really good job even in very harsh conditions such as the finnish winter in which the camera was working after 3 hours at -30C celsius. The only problem I found is the ISO from 800 upwards.

For many years I shot with SLRs and then purchased a Sony Cybershot so the SLR sat in the closet. Just recently purchased the Nikon D70s and have really enjoyed using it. Haven't really used it enough to give an objective critique.

Its a great camera, easy to use for the most part. Sometimes I dont like the grain,(it cant do less than 200ISO)and the tendency to underexpose by default (it's correctable though) and not get the candy colours that canons get without some post production or luck (it seems?). I like that it looks and feels pretty professional. With a good lens it makes awesome photos. Its fast and is just the right size and weight for me at least.

Pros for me: Nikon lens quality, aperature range, flexibility to change shutter/aperature priority, metering, exposure controls (ISO, WB, format), good focal length coverage in 2 lenses (18-70, 55-200, digitally measured). Cons for me: Too slow read/write when using RAW. Would prefer anti-shake built in body.

Obtained D70s from Ebay at the end of 2005, so I am still learning to use the SLR, which has more options than my minivan. My initial impression is that this is a bulky camera with lots of potential.

This is my first digital SLR, and I've only had it a month, but so far it is great. I'm very happy with the quality of images, and the 18-70mm lens in the kit is fast to focus and smooth. I bought the Nikon because I already own a Nikon film camera and lenses, and the D70s was relatively easy to transition to because of the similar controls.

This is my second digital camera. I like the fact that I can use my film lenses. I am not sure that the images I'm getting are as crisp as I was getting with my F100, N80 or the Sony Mavica. The outdoor images are good, but the indoor ones are just not there yet. Since it is relatively new, it could be operator problems!

The D70s is a great camera for an individual starting out seriously in photography. Nikon has for the most part used the same mount for their lenses allowing any Nikon lens new or old to be mounted on the camera. The ergonomics are great making the camera very comfortable and the firmware is easy to use and understand.

This is my first leap into the DSLR arena from a Fuji point and shoot camera. While I am still learning the more intricate features and manual modes, I have been out shooting pictures with just the auto features on and have gotten very impressive results. I have found that most of the pictures do need to be sharpened in whatever software program you use (I used the software that came with the camera...PictureProject) and once sharpened looks fantastic. Still working on learning the best way to capture and enhance skin tones. Great camera all around though and so far I'm very happy.

I've only had my Nikon D70S for a couple of months. So far I found the menus easy to learn and maneuver through. It's lightweight and easy to handle, which was a consideration before purchasing. Since I'm in the "learning" stage I've loved the auto features...but I'm ready to start using manual and exploring, so we'll see how that goes. In addition to the 18-70mm lens, I purchased a macro lens (60mm) at the same time I bought the camera, which has brought lots of joy. I love floral photography and finally my photos are matching my "vision!"

After using the Nikon F5 for the last few years, I feel the Nikon D70's metering doesn/t compare to the metering system that I am use too with the F5. It will take a lot of bracketing until I am familiar with the digital system.

I have the "D70sKit" (D70s Body + AF-S 18-70mm DX ED Lens). It took me over a year and a half in deciding to make the move to a DSLR. The choice for a "nikon" wasn't so difficult as I have always had (and still have) Nikon equipment (FM, FE, F501, F100, Various Nikkor lenses (and other makes with "nikon fit"), SB flashes, etc..). I followed a lot of threads in different forums complimenting or criticising the "amature" or "entry-level DSLR" from Nikon, however, when I saw the "D70s Kit" at an incredibly low price (compared to what I had seen from many of the major camera stores), I took the plunge. All I can say is that it is an absolutely fantastic camera - more than I had expected! The worst part is getting home with the new camera and having to wait 2-3 hours for the battery to charge up before being able to use it! Although it does seem to have a lot of "plastic" it really is solidly built. It instantly "feels nikon". With the fully charged battery, the camera is instantly ready to go (and I mean instantly!).. the AF is incredibly fast. The "kit" lens is excellent: typical nikkor quality and performance for an economical all-rounder zoom lens. I would recommend anyone who wants to move to an excellent DSLR to buy the D70s. Also, if anyone is undecided about what lens to choose, with the 18-70 one can't go wrong as an "all-rounder walk around". (I would also recommend reading Thom Hogan's guide to the D70/D70s... TH explains a lot about getting the best from this camera!).

Brand new to me...but already I'm in love. I can't believe how often I'm choosing to use complete manual mode and getting great results. Should have done this a long time ago.

I got the D70s only because my D100 was having problems focusing quickly in my studio. In this area, the D70s is vastly improved, as is the shutter lag. I do miss a larger camera body and the general layout of the D100, but I'm finding the D70s a formatable piece of equipment. Oh, and be forewarned, you have to upgrade to CS2 if you shoot raw with the D70S (not the D70) or use Nikon Capture to process and convert for PS.

I love the speed of the thing--writes fast, starts up without any lag. Great for shooting sports. It's not complicated. The color is accurate. I've been having too much fun to even think about what I don't like. Well if there is one thing--I would have liked Nikon to have made it an eight megapixel.

Possibly the best value-for-money Digital SLR available right now, I love it! Only minor drawback is that it can't shoot 100 ISO (lowest setting is 200). But, with the DX 18/70 ED kit lens, it more than makes up for the minor issues, ad a decent wideangle and a 200 or 300 zoom to it, and Bob's your uncle! :-)
It feels and handles like a much more expensive SLR.

Too early to tell much about my two weeks old D70s. There is nothing that I dislike so far. I specificaly like D70s handling: it fits in my hand very well, much better than Canon 20D that I tried. It also has fantastic LCD monitor that you can use even in daylight. D70s replaced two Nikon N80 bodies that I liked a lot. I purchased Tamron 18-200 with it. As do-it-all lens it is terrific, but pretty slow focusing. I have other faster and better lenses. Nikon software that comes with the camera is totally useless. It does not even display EXIF file info or histogram. I removed it from my laptop.

Nikon D70s is a great 6.1 Mpixels DSRL. You can power it up in 0.2 sec and therefore is always ready to shoot. Since I am already a Nikon user, the D70s is very easy to use and in my opinion, the buttons are all in the right place for quick shooting. Pros: „X Price for a DSLR „X Matrix and Spot metering „X Depth-of-field-preview „X 3 frames per sec „X Different operating mode such as Auto and Manual mode „X Choice of shooting in RAW and JPEG simultaneously „X Camera feel and look „X Remote control Cons: „X 6.1 mpix instead of 8 mpix „X Minimum ISO setting of 200 instead of a lower setting.

Great digital camera ! It's controls are laid out in the same manner as the other Nikon SLR cameras I own so I didn't lose any time. I am however, still learning how to set the various image settigns (saturation, white balance ...)

Instant photos help to determine if you have the right light and aperture settings for the photo you are expecting. I really like the Nikon software which gives you the ability to preview a photo. The clarity is great and color saturation very good. I only wish that this camera could go as low as 50 ASA/ISO

My first digital camera. Lot of fun. My pictures are way better! On plus: long battery life, RAW format, manual overrrides. On minus: no cable release and no flash jack (must buy separate devices).
