I did not find this book particularly helpful. The author talks too much about why and if you want to be a photographer. To me, most of what this book says is applicable to just about any business. I was looking for information about how to decide what to charge, how to determine what profit margin you need, how to decide what cost of sale markup rate to use, how to determine what general expenses and what percentage of sales will go to general expenses and how to build effective price list, the different types of pricing and marketing strategies to employ. What this book offers I can get from taking any general small business course at my local university. It would have been nice if the author had developed the book from the point of view of actually starting a business. In other words, case studies with actual examples.

First and foremost, the current link (9/7/2002) refers to the 2ed of the book. This review is for the 3ed.

Written by a photographer, but for in a series on home-based business, this book is unlike most others on running a photography business. First, the information provided actually makes business sense; secondly, there is the recognition that to make money from photography, one has to run a business and not just shoot good pictures.

Finally, the book is geared toward those who are planning to run a HOME-based business, whether as the initial stages of becoming a full-time professional or simply to supplement income and pay for all that expensive equipment. As I fit into the latter category, this book has been indispensible. For those who plan to take on photography as a full time, professional venture, this book still provides much neede information that is of utility; however, it lacks enough to be the sole source for effective business management.

Regardless, for the cost, an excellent resource for photographers.
