A little slow when zooming and unzooming but other than that it has been great. It takes a fantastic picture and having the option of zooming out to a 350 mm equivalent at an 8 mp photo size in a package that small is brilliant. I love my Nikon 801S but my idea of the perfect digital camera is an all in one package that gives me all the options of my 801S. Thats exactly what this camera has given me.

The positives are legend, particularly the quality of the lens, the macro setting, & the swiveling monitor (essential for nature photography!).
The deficiencies do not outweigh the positives, but the deficiencies are important:
1) The manual focus feature is useless. It jerks up the focal length ladder in a manner that defies proper focusing.
2) The low-light focusing assistance is useless beyond 4-5 ft. The lack of a manual focusing option makes this double trouble in low-light conditions.
3) The infinity focus setting (an over-ride feature) has never worked, period. Even for sunsets I have to focus on another distant object to assure proper focus (really!).

Takes great quality pictures with ease, the zoom and pixel power allow for cropping of photos that retain good clarity.
Drawbacks are slow in loading when turning on and after shooting a photo, and not reliable for taking sports or action shots.

The 8800 is a good camera for most situations. It takes very good pictures and is relatively easy to carry around. The down side is that the camera is very slow to copy images to the CF card and the camera. It is also pretty much useless if you are looking for a camera to use at sporting events. However the camera performs admirably when used for nature and landscape type pictures.

10X ZOOM GOOD, 8 MEGA PIXELS GOOD, RAW AVAILABLE GOOD,
ADD ON WIDE ANGLE AND ADDITIONAL X DON'T WORK VERY WELL BUT THEY ARE NOT NIKON PRODUCTS.
SHUTTER LAG SEEMS EXCESSIVE. HARD TO USE AUTO FOCUS AND CATCH A MOVING SUBJECT IN THE VIEWFINDER. I HAVE TROUBLE SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE CORRECTLY WHEN THERE IS A COMBINATION OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT AND FLASH. THE INFORMATIOJN SCREEN ON THE TOP OF THE CAMERA IS HARD TO READ. I HAVE HAD A CASE OF ERRATIC BEHAVIOR WHEN A LOW CHARGED BATTERY WAS REPLACED. THE NEXT SHOT HAD A DOUBLE EXPOSURE LOOK ABOUT IT. GENERALLY I AM HAPPY WITH THE CAMERA, BUT AM LOOKING TO MOVE UP TO A SLR FOR BETTER NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY.

I love my Nikon CP8800! While it certainly has limitations, it is extremely versitile, with telephoto and macro abilities all stuffed into a single package. Okay so it is not as great as having an SLR with 10 different lenses, but at least I can stick it in my purse and know that if I see a good picture than I can always take it. I also like to just wander around with it and not have to lug around heavy equipment. However, my camera bag is getting a little heavier because wide angle, telephoto, and fisheye attachments are now available. (And after all, all photographers are suckers for nifty attachments!)
My only complaint is that the camera does not perform well in low light situations. The focus gets a bit fussy and the camera sometimes decides to throw out huge puffs of light without being asked to do so. Oh well... Nikon can never make a hybrid camera too perfect... Otherwise... How would they sell their SLRs? All joking aside, it can take some really dense and wonderful images. This is a good little machine!
P.S. Believe it or not, it has a 10X zoom (not bad for a little hybrid)!

This is my first experience with digital photography after using my trusty old Pentax K1000 for more than 20 years. With the Nikon, which was a Christmas gift from my kids in 2004, I was able to explore this new photography experience. For the most part, I'm very happy with this camera as an introduction to taking digital photos. I love the convenience and have been pleased with the quality of the camera and my photos. The camera has features which allow for versatility; for example, many settings specific to different settings.
Something I don't like is the delay between pushing the shutter and when the actual picture is taken, not a big deal for scenery but I've missed pictures where there is movement, such as grandkid pictures or pictures of animals, birds, etc. Also, I would like to have a more powerful zoom, so eventually I will upgrade.

I have not been pleased with this camera. It is slow to focus and terrible in low light. The images tend to be very noisy. The first 8800 I purchased was so defective and needed to returned to Nikon for repair twice and finally they replaced it. I am still not impressed with this camera. It takes a lot of work in Photoshop to make a decent image.

The flashlight is below average expectation. It takes great sharp photo. The WB is a bit on the greenish side. ASA limitation at 400.

I like the 8800 a lot, except as is noted in most reviews it can be very slow to write to card in higher quality settings. I miss having the speed that you get with some other cameras. Though I do like the antivibration properties and quality of photo as far as color is right on most of the time.
If I were to do it over maybe I would chose a SLR instead, though is nice not to have to carry around extra lenses and not to have to worry about dust.

An impressive tool for a back-up camera, the Nikon Coolpix 8800 provides the ability to utilize manual focus for depth-of-field work, excellent glass, and an exceptionally impressive optical zoom. Perhaps the only major drawback (and hence the 3.5 rating) is the very slow processing and shutter-press-to-write time.

I like the anti-shake feature, and I like the various settings such as macro, fireworks, night photos, museum, portrait, etc. I like the fact that it has amp. setting priority and speed priority, and I especially like the swivel viewing screen. I like the fact that it has all manual possibilities too.
The disadvantages are the ASA will only reach 800 (although this can be compensated for slow night-time photos), and the speed. I wish it were faster processing the photos.

This Nikon Coolpix 880 digital camera is an upgrade from my HP photosmart 750 and is the best move I have made in my choice of camera. Very easy to use and everything at your fingertips. Lots of scene modes and my favotite is the flower mode. The only thing I wish it has was a better remote. The other thing that could be improved is the flash as sometimes in macro shots, it leaves a shadow and sometimes blackens part of your shot. Will have to purchase a hot shoe flash.

Excellent images, a bit slow in taking pictures, even with high speed storage. The camera is very difficult when taking macro shots, but when you get them, it is good. A comment about the lense: I tend to get a bend, or distortion when taking architecture, door frames, or anything that has a straight edge surface (not very noticable though at all)

I still prefer a 350D but still saving up for it.

The Nikon 8800 takes excellent pictures for quality. I like and dislike the same features. Those are the multiple settings available. There are so many options that it seems impossible to learn. As a result I set it on automatic and hope it does the right things.
With so many Options, I would need to carry my manual with me and look up all the instructions to take each picture, meanwhile the scene would have changed.

Pros: Good pictures, 10x zoom, good macro, many controls and options.
Cons: Some of the controls require too much effort or are hard to operate (e.g. 5 steps to delete a picture, Some controls require holding two buttons when one would have done quite well)
The preview function lasts only one second
The lens casts a shadow on a macro picture taken with flash

I'm mainly just a point and shoot type of photographer. My main interest is the results and this camera is giving me some excellent results.

I've owned the camera for about 6 months now and I don't have any complaints. I'm quite pleased with it!

I like the way this camera feels in my hands. That being said my style of holding the camera often inadvertently depressed the AF button on the left side of the lens changing the focusing mode. The camera takes wonderful photos in RAW, JPEG and TIFF. The processing time for TIFF and RAW can sometimes be an inconvenience. The sharpness of the photos is excellent. Shooting mainly at ISO 50 and occassionaly at ISO 100 I have been extremely pleased. Moire/purple fringing is absent at ISO 50 and darn little and infrequent at ISO 100. Focusing is this camera's weak point. It is better than some I have used but not what I had hoped. It gets lost easily in low light and low contrast situations. It is rugged. Photos at -20F after being lugged around for an hour - no problem. Battery life is good. After having taken more than 1,000 images I am happy with it, and glad I bought it. If the focusing was more aggressive and able to lock up in low light and low contrast I would give it a 5 for a ZLR, even with the AF button located where it is.

Love this camera but the lens has just gotten out of whack so who knows what it's going to take to fix it. I needed a ultra compact for travel anyway.

I got this for the image stabilization feature; haven't seen that much difference yet but I haven't shot with it a lot yet.

I like its size and the zoom range. I don't like the length of time it takes to write a RAW file but that does give me time to think about the next shot

This camera is a great alternative to those seeking a Digital SLR but don't have the cash. The lens it comes with is equivallent to about 3 add-on lenses for an SLR. Good quality images. Not the best for fast action shots.

I really like the vibration reduction when taking pictures in low light. It reduces the blur you would get otherwise. If you have the camera set to Automatic, there's a feature of the pop up flash. The flash pops up when you need that extra lighting.
The camera has a sturdy rubber grip and it fairly light. I would rate this camera a 10 on the detail of the subject that you shoot.

This is an excellent camera -- a compromise that doesn't compromise anything. The zoom lens is powerful enough and the add-on lenses virtually eliminates the need to have interchangeable lenses. The camera's abilty to do color correction is great, as is the resolution.

I just got this camera as a present and have taken some wonderful pictures so far. The added megapixels are definitely a benefit when it comes to the amount of information captured. The versatility is also a huge plus.

this camera is way too limiting & very disappointing if one is out on the streets shooting as a photojournalist and needs that "quick spontaneous instinctive shot. I own and am spoiled by the D100 ( I carry 2 ). It is always ready and shoots fast! I have lost many shots with this 8800 waiting for it to start up to focus and in light of its technical wonders it is up for sale. Give me your best offer please!

I have recently bought my camera and it quite reaches my expectations for the price I paid, since I have made some research beforehand. The only disadvantage that I can find is that you can't change the lens, but its not an SLR anyway. I am very happy with the lens provided which is very clear

So far, so good, but it's still so new to me that I just haven't had time to put it to any extreme tests.
One thing I DON'T like about it is the placement of the zoom control. It's right where I grip and I've inadverdently activated the zoom with my thumb, while pressing the shutter release. I'm not sure what the solution would be, because it is a convenient position when I DO want to access it. Hmmmmmmmmmmm Well it's where it is, and I'll learn to adapt.
Still reading the owner's manual.

Just got the camera and haven't really had a chance to go all with it. I've owned the 5700 for over a year and the 8800 is similiar but a whole new animal. What I've done so far - it's outstanding.
I'll keep you informed once I've used it on a few photo shoots.

Pros: Very ergonomic and nice design (feels better that 8700) Good balance between camera size and photo quality. Easy to use it under my sky jacket. I love the Nikon color! I feels very strong. The lens is works fantastic with IS. Very easy to take beautiful pictures with the scene modes. Cons: Still a little slow. Nikon should be better than average cameras.
