Still available as a close-out, it's a good buy, at under $500. 4000 ppi gives a huge file size, especially at the 14-bit max bit depth. Like ANY film scanner, there are a few caveats. Your computer has to have at least 512 MB of RAM and A LOT of free hard drive space to allow working these big files in Photoshop. Second, you need either Ed Hamrick's Vue Scan OR Silverfast to do a decent job on many slides. Canon, like all scanner mfrs, skimps on software development. The 4000US does a fine job on negative film, however, using the Canon software provided. I turn off all scanner software fixes, except for dust spotting, and do the tonal correction in Photoshop. Third, add SCSI interface to your computer, or be prepared for some slow scan times. I use USB 1; I put four slides in the slide holder and go eat dinner.
