This was an excellent course. I'm a new DSLR owner and a complete novice in photography, and came away from this course feeling I had a strong grasp on many concepts and techniques. The critiques were valuable and I saw steady improvement in my photography. My biggest piece of advice is to continually ask questions as you go along! Peter responds to questions quickly and in great detail, and the more you engage and invest in this course the more you'll get out of it. He is a great teacher and resource, highly recommend!

I have owned a digital SLR for several years, but was apprehensive to start pushing all of those buttons. I was using auto mode on a camera that can do so much more! This class was just what I needed to get out of my comfort zone and start exploring the more creative side of photography. Peter is a very knowledgeable and supportive instructor, who takes the time to give helpful critiques. I still have much to learn, but feel this class has given me a good push in the right direction to becoming a better photographer.

I have always loved photography and received a nice DSLR camera from my wife as a gift. After owning it for a year and reading several books, I still would end up using the full auto mode. I found the BetterPhoto site and signed up. This course for me was the perfect choice as my first. It started out basic enough for a beginner like myself and gradually the assignments got tougher. Peter is a great instructor, his instructions are clear and he was always ready to answer any questions. His critiques were timely, informative and always ended with a tip or two on how to improve on that particular lesson. I have been practicing what I have learned, my camera comes with me now when I leave the house and I have not gone back to full auto mode since. It is a good feeling. I would highly recommend this course to anyone just starting out like myself. I am looking forward to my next course which just happens to start tomorrow. Thanks Peter for sharing your knowledge with us, it has been a real pleasure.

This class was my first online photography course. Not only did I enjoy the classe and learn about my camera, I received valuable feedback from the instructor. I would recommend this course to anyone who is unfamiliar with their camera features and unfamiliar with the techniques of photography. - Andrea

This was my first course ever in photography although I have photographed a long time but felt frustrated at not being able to control or understand all the camera functions. I have learnt so much during these weeks. Things I knew I needed to learn, but also things that I didn't know. The lessons are short and concise, but contains everything you need to know written in a simple way so that you can understand. Even me who is from Sweden and don't have English as my first language. The assignments are fun and the criticism of the photos are very educational. I have gone from being a vacation photographer to sneak around the city at night with a camera and tripod, looking for the perfect scene and it's so much fun. Too bad the course was over so quickly but now I'm really keen to learn more! This was the perfect kick-start on my way to become a Certified Photographer. Thank you, Peter!

This was my first experience with an online class. I am pleased to report that it was really a great way to learn - especially for busy people. The lessons are well thought out and organized, and the corresponding assignments very helpful. Peter's critiques were timely and valuable. Peter was also very quick to answer any questions. Overall, I believe this is a great introductory class for anyone just entering the world of digital photography or for those individuals, like myself, who need more instruction on the basics and fundamentals.

If you have little to no knowledge of photography basics, this could be the course for you. It is perhaps more comprehensive than others in looking beyond actual picture taking to how you save your files and how to do some simple touch-ups on the computer. The only thing missing is printing. I took this course as something of an intermediate learner, or perhaps advanced beginner. I did so because I had just purchased a new camera and thought doing a basic course would help me relearn the basics on my new camera. Peter’s course fulfilled that expectation. I regret that I didn’t have more time to give to the assignments, but I can say that I completed them all (mostly on time) and learned how to navigate many – but not all – the dials, buttons, and menu selections on my new Nikon. Thank you, Peter.

I received a new Canon Camera for Christmas and was really struggling with all the different knobs and how to use them for my advantage. Peter's course was wonderful! The lessons were really very easy to follow and full of useful information. Peter was always very quick with answers to all my questions. The critiques were very useful to me and helped me to make appropriate changes on my techniques. I have learned so very much in 4 weeks and am ready to fly off to Walt Disney World to try everything out! Thanks Peter for all your help.

I signed up for a different "fundamentals" course a while back and found myself overwhelmed by the level of photography I saw from the other students. I also was not comfortable with my new DSLR camera. Peter's course was just what I needed to bring me up to speed on the technical aspects of using the camera; but I also got more as he guided me and the other students to improve our composition as well. I feel much more comfortable and confident moving forward and have already enrolled in a composition course. Thank you, Peter.

I feel like I do when I finish a great book, blue and longing for more. Peter's course was very rewarding for me as he set up some challenges and I did my utmost to successfully accomplish each and every one. The lessons were well thought out and it was easy to comprehend the concepts and techniques taught by the instructor so that I was able to understan how certain photos were made and understand why past shots were failures. Going from simple film many years ago to digital cameras with tomes of menus was an intimidating task, but this course and Peter's praise and encouragement helped me succeed in my goal and I am a better photographer for it. An excellent course I am just sorry to see it end. Thank you Peter.

I was able to go from always having to carry the instruction manual with me to feeling like I know my DSLR like a friend. This course well exceeded my expectations. Peter is an extremely committed teacher - always going out of his way to ensure that students fully understood each lesson. He would answer questions literally within minutes and conveys an infectious enthusiasm for photography. This was my first BP course and a great introduction. I'll be doing more courses and hope Peter expands his course list. I'd love to do another course with him.

I believe I was the only one in our group who had my particular non-SLR camera. On occasion, this meant my ability to execute a lesson was a little different from everyone else's (especially related to aperture) but Peter consistently helped me get the most out of my camera. I peppered him with questions, and he always answered promptly and in great detail. I learned so much about my camera, composition and even how to adjust an imperfect picture with computer software. A very satisfying experience!

I began this class afraid to touch more than one or two buttons on my new digital, and ended it with an excellent appreciation of what those buttons were for and how to use them. Peter was an excellent instructor, patient and attentive. His critiques were gentle, but to the point. A superb class for learning how to make a good use of the camera.

This was my first photography course other than a darkroom course back in the dark(room) ages. I'm glad I signed up for a 8-week course, although it does require commitment to carry out each week's assignment. A camera course is a great starting point, as learning the basics on how to use one's digital camera controls lays a good foundation for whatever creative direction the student wishes to follow.

This was a very friendly class, with Peter setting the tone.

Peter is committed to each student learning from each lesson. He is prompt in answering questions and submitting critiques. He is an expert on digital cameras and accessories, and shares that information when asked.

Taking my first BP class was the best educational decision I've made in a long time! Choosing Peter's class was my second best. The experience was worth every penny.

Lessons were appropriately challenging. Assignments were relevant. I was astonished at the level of Peter's attention to all of us and with his insightful comments and suggestions. Right on the money every time...and he did not let us slide by when he knew we could do better.

Also, being able to communicate, encourage and be encouraged by fellow classmates was a significant plus in this class. Seeing the work of others and Peter's comments was invaluable to my learning process.

I will definitely be back for more!

I came to this class assuming I knew a lot about cameras. I came from a film based experience. Peter quickly and gently humbled me as he educated me to the NEW world of the DIGITAL camera. I have never learned so much, in such a short time. I also realize I have only scratched the surface. Peter's guidance has challenged me to keep learning. He made learning great fun!

This was an excellent course to get to know your camera and many of its features. Peter does a great job as the instructor/facilitator. His responses to questions are prompt and critiques for assignments are to the point and always timely.

I would like to see video incorporated in the lessons moving forward. This subject lends itself well to video segments.

My only complaint is that I took this course in the dead of winter in Minnesota, so freezing my hands and trouncing through snow to get the shot was part of the package. Of course, this was my choice, my fault. It will just let me appreciate shooting in the spring, summer, and fall more.

I am glad I took the course and feel prepared to create solid images with what I learned. I should mention I have a point and shoot Panasonic ZS7 and although almost all of my classmates had DLSR cameras, as long as I could control aperture and shutter speeds, along with the Program and fully automatic modes, I had just as much value from the course. My camera is not as wide in range as a DLSR, but I could complete all the assignments applying them to my camera.

I started this course with very limited knowledge of my camera, but have come away with so much more. Peter was a great teacher offering critiques and answers to questions in a timely manner, and with words that were easy to understand. I think I will in time and with practice of what I have been taught start using my camera to the potential it has and not on just the auto mode. Thanks for the Great Job!

Thanks Peter! This was my first photography class and I certainly found value in Peter's instruction and advice. Easy to understand lesson plans which weren't too time consuming. Peter's critiques were timely and helpful. I've mostly stuck with Program mode. But after this course, I'll definitely be using Aperture and Shutter Speed modes from now on! Would definitely recommend this course! And would definitely recommend Peter!

I began the course with a vague understanding of the capabilities of my camera and knew I needed to enroll in a class to make any progress. His lessons were well written and broken down into small, easy to follow steps. I completed each lesson feeling more and more confident. I am amazed at how much I learned in a matter of eight weeks! I highly recommend Peter's course to anyone!

I debated for weeks as to which photography course I should take, as I was a true beginning photographer. I wanted a class that could gradually take me from the most basic concepts to a point where I could be more confident in myself and my photography. This class was perfect!! The lessons were very clear and specific, and if there were questions, Peter answered them quickly and patiently. I have learned a lot from this class and will definitely take another class in the future!

My goal in this course was threefold:
1.) Gain an in-depth understanding of my new camera's functions.
2.)Be forced to get out more to take photos.
3.) Improve my photography.

Here is the degree to which this course helped me meet these goals:
1.) To complete the varied assignments I had to go thru my manual time and again to learn where the settings were to take the required photos. In the process, I not only learned the basic settings but also discovered some very interesting features.
2.) I got out some to take photos but most of the assignments could be completed at my home or in close proximity to it.
3.) I do think I made some gains in my photography skills, especially in overcoming my reluctance to use Aperture Mode and Shutter Speed Mode. The lessons clearly illustrated circumstances in which choosing A or S rendered better results than Program Mode.

Went from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds flat. Okay, not quite so fast, but I was a true beginner in every sense of the word and now I'm enjoying photography and taking some pretty great shots. This class is perfect for those who barely know which end of the camera to hold, but also challenging enough for those who've been at it awhile. I've learned so much that I can even answer questions from my friends who've been at it for years. Thanks again, Peter!

Peter set an excellent course for anyone interested in getting a good foundation set in photography. Throughout the eight weeks you will cover practically ever term (ex aperture, dof etc) and you can take your time to understand. Peter is patient with re-explaining the material if necessary. I know I asked a lot of questions on and off the subject and got the answers that made sense and helped build my confidence with all the new material covered. I am very happy I took this course and am a more capable photographer today because of it. thank you Peter.

I had contemplated all of the different courses available for learning the fundamentals of photography before I finally picked Peter's course (both at the local university here and online). Peter's course outline seemed to be the best. I was hesitant to even take an online course fearing I would not be able to grasp the lessons by just reading them, as I am a person who needs to learn things by example in person. Well, I found I had nothing to fear. Peter's lessons were packed with information, clearly written, and easy to understand. When I had questions (and I had a lot), Peter answered them quickly and he showed great patience with me. He never made me feel stupid and he was always very encouraging. I must admit I thought I knew so much more about photography than I actually did when I started the course. I am amazed at how much I did not know, and how much I learned. I am excited about continuing to practice what Peter taught me. I would definitely recommend Peter’s course to anyone wanting to know more about the fundamentals of photography (even if you think you already know it all!). I would also recommend Peter as an instructor because of his vast knowledge in the field, and his excellent ability to convey that knowledge to his students.

Peter was so thorough and so prompt in responding to uploaded photo assignments and student questions. The assignments were long enough to challenge you but not SO long that you were completely overwhelmed. I learned SO much from Peter about how my camera works and ways to get better shots. My only regret is that I didn't have the time I needed to really give every assignment my best effort. I plan to go back through each lesson and work on mastering the techniques. This was a really good experience and I'm happy that I decided to take the class. Thanks so much Peter!

Mr Burian's course on "Mastering The Digital Camera and Photography" gave me the knowledge I have been needing in order to operate my camera more efficiently and successfully and to take better images! My images are improving because I am now more aware of lighting, proper camera settings, composition and so forth! I was over-joyed with the lessons and what I have learned! Thanks Peter! The course was great, I love photography, but was not very advanced in technical side of it, this course helped me not only improve in that field, but also got me interested to learn even more about the technical side, and properly understand how exactly my camera (nikon d 40x) works. Many of my friends who even did not know I was taking this course, commented on the improvement of my pictures which I posted on my face book. That felt great and only confirmed how right it was to take this course!!
Thanks Peter!

He then challenges you to put this knowledge into action -- in fun, creative ways. This course truly rekindled my passion for photography and will be the first of many courses at BetterPhoto. As an instructor, Peter is terrific. He's extremely knowledgeable, communicates clearly, and is there to answer all your questions. Don't hesitate to sign up for this course. This is an excellent course for learning the controls contained in your digital camera. I found it was a lot of work, but well worth it. Peter is very knowledgable, and he provides excellent critiques of the students' work. In addition, he answers student questions in a timely manner. I am glad I took this course.

After a year of using a Canon 20D for point and shoot, trying a DVD and several books (all with little success), I finally enrolled in Peter's course, not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. I feel that I now have the basic tools to compose and take digital images in many situations that I would not have attempted previously. Beneficial were the excellent lessons, manditory assignments, helpful critiques, instructor patience, and the experiences, i.e.questions, critiques, problems, etc. of other students. Thank you Peter.

Peter's class was great! It challeneged me each week and I gained knowledge about my camera that I never had understood from reading the book. I now understand what all the setting on my camera are for and what happens when I change them. I am excited to get out of Program mode and work in Manual. I used a point and shoot with maunal capabililties for this class. In some ways I was frustrated by its limitations, but ordered my Digital SLR today! The lessons were easy to read and the assignments challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and photograph new material. I highly recommend this class.

This was an excellent class! I cannot believe how much I learned in just 8 weeks. Finally, technical information that I've been trying to understand by reading about for years such as aperture, shutter speed, depth of field. etc. make sense to me because the course lessons explained these in plain language and the assignments gave me hands-on experience trying the seting and techniques out. Peter was a great instructor, and his critiques were helpful and encouraging. I plan to take several other BetterPhoto.com courses, but this was the right one for me to take first to provide a solid foundation to build on.

I learned more in this 8 week class than I have trying to learn on my own in the past year. My suggestion to anyone interested in a class like this is to make sure you have lots of time available to get out and take photos. I would love to take another class with Peter and with BetterPhoto.com.

I really enjoyed this course and learned a lot! The lessons were straight-forward and broken up in an easy to follow manner so that each week you learned a lot but not too much that you became overwhelmed with information. I wasn't sure what to expect from taking an online photo course but it is the perfect way to learn on your own time, yet still have instruction and goals. After taking this class I feel comfortable and confident taking my camera off auto. I look forward to taking more classes in the future.

The well-laid out and easy to follow lessons, building upon each other from week to week, covered all that I was hoping – and more. I feel as though I have greatly improved my abilities and confidence and look for opportunities to take photographs as often as possible. Peter was a very patient and extremely knowledgeable instructor who really made this a good experience. I would recommend this course to anyone, and look forward to other Better Photo courses, and will make a point of looking for ones taught by Peter.

This course was very beneficial to me as I learned a lot from Peter. The lesson plans were down to earth and easy to understand. The concepts reviewed in this course were very critical to me as I now better understand Depth of Field, Shutter speed, aperture, f stops, exposure compensation, white balance, basics on histograms, use of the creative modes on the camera, etc. and how to apply these concepts in photography. In applying these basic concepts for the practical side of the course, the lesson assignments covered composition concepts, nite and lo lite photography, bluring and freezing motion, blurring background using shallow depth of field, in camera settings for contrast, sharpness, saturation, etc. as well as a class on image software editing. Peter's critiques and feedback were very positive. Overall, the course exceeded my goals and highly recommend this class to those really wanting to learn and enhance their photography skills.

I can say without qualification that Peter Burian's Mastering class has been an extraordinarily good experience. If you are reading these reviews and have never taken a course like this online and are wondering what it would be like and whether it would be worth it, I was in that position just 2 months ago. $297 for an 8 week course isn't peanuts and I just didn't know what to expect. The course has been worthwhile in every way. Peter Burian is a published author on photography and he writes clearly and well. You receive 14-16 pages of lesson material every week. It includes information, tips, hints, inside stuff from a real pro, which Peter is. Each lesson is illustrated with many photographs. Each week, you get an assignment. Photos you do for the assignment are uploaded where Peter can critique them. As a student, you get critiques on your own photos, and can also see all the photos of your classmates and all the critiques they get. I found studying my classmates' interpretations of the assignment to be *extremely* valuable and enjoyable. There is also a section where you can ask questions and make comments. In Peter's class, there was a good bit of interaction. Peter is extremely quick with his critiques, and in answering questions, both in the Q&A area and via email. Lesson topics included basic composition, White Balance, ISO, depth of field, shutter speeds and aperture settings, using high and low contrast, saturation and sharpness settings, practicing the Rule of Thirds and an *excellent* lesson and assignment on basic photo editing. It's great to be able to sign into the class anytime that is convenient for you and instructors like Peter are very flexible about vacations, illness, family and work pressures, etc. If you have some experience in photography, you will learn a lot, make friends and have a great time! If you are new to digital photography, it may be quite a challenge (it was for me!) or you may take it in stride - but I can just about guarantee that you'll learn a lot, meet your goals, have a terrific time and feel you've spent your money well!

They say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I've been convinced. While still taking Peter's course, I took a second, 4 week course. I am now taking another 4 week class and will be taking a couple more courses later in the summer and in the fall.

Peter's Digital Photography Class was top-notch, and I would highly
recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting a good grasp of basic
photography concepts. Each topic that was covered was introduced with a
good clear understanding and photos to illustrate the concept. The
assignments were clear and challenging, with good focus on the concepts.
Peter's feedback was very quick, helpful and encouraging. He offered lots
of flexibility in the course and was understanding when assignments were
delayed. The opportunity to reshoot assignments that didn't meet the mark
was a plus in helping me grasp a concept I struggled with. I also
appreciated Peter's willingness to address other photography subjects that
weren't covered in the lessons. Thanks for a great opportunity. I will
definitely be back for more classes in the fall!

I really enjoyed the class and I think that I learned a lot of very useful things during the course. I wasn't quite sure how the whole internet learning experience would be, but your interaction with the students and your advice/critiques made it great. For me, you were able to teach some very useful tools to someone who really didn't have any technical photography knowledge. I'm really looking forward to practicing what I learned in the class and hope that everything starts becoming second nature to me!

This course was exactly what I was looking for. There is no instruction manual that you can buy that would come close to providing you with what Peters course provides.

I really enjoyed the weekly assignments. These assignments were very carefully developed to help the student get a better understanding of the topic being covered. Further to that, the feedback was right on the mark. Peter was great in letting you know what parts of the assignment you did well on and at the same time if you missed the point of the assignment, Peter would let you know where you went wrong. There is no book I know of that could do that!

This class has been a wonderful guide in exploring the features of my camera. The camera manual, as most people already know, doesn't shed much light on what you can do. You have to know what you want to do before you can find it in the manual. Peter's course does just that. It explains very clearly the sorts of things you might want to do and THEN you can figure it out from the manual. The assignments are perfect for underscoring the camera features. Peter's critiques are prompt and provide additional guidance if you are off the mark in what is to be accomplished. It would have been years (if ever!) before I bothered to figure out white balance, picture quality, and any number of other features if I had not had this course to guide me. I wasn't totally sure how an on-line class would work, but I honestly think it has been at least as good and probably better than attending a face-to-face class. I'm really looking forward to more classes at BetterPhoto. Thanks, Peter ... job well done.

Peter's course was exactly what I was looking for. For example on how I
used his training this past weekend. My wife is the photographer and I
do the computer work during weddings. (i.e. Dump cards, backup images,
replace batteries, etc). Being a 24yr veteran in computers, I setup the
computer system to do most of the work for me leaving me with time on my
hands at the wedding. My wife mentioned to pick up the camera and come
shoot with her. She would set the camera up on the way she thought
would satisfy the setting and I would fire away. Some images were ok,
but nothing special because in certain cases the camera needed adjusting
outside of the setting that I was using. I felt totally useless
especially when I would look at the LCD and see the white wedding dress
blown totally out and didn't know what to do to the camera.

This past weekend we had the largest wedding that she has ever done. I
used the Nikon D1X on manual mode adjusting the camera to different
lighting that I was running up on. I felt totally comfortable using the
camera and had a blast doing it, thanks to Peter's class. My opinion
this class should be the first class any beginner should ever take. You
HAVE to know your camera before learning shooting techniques and getting
that special shot. I might not know everything about the D1X but I now
know where to start and make changes.

Thanks Peter for your class, I've got some really good shots from this
wedding. We had a total of 1700 images.

Peter, Thank you for clear, fun and interesting assignments. I am able to use my camera with ease and confindence rather than just giving up and using the Auto mode all the time. The assignments were given feedback immediately and with positve feedback. I thought I was taking a course that may be to easy for me, but it was more than I ever expected-An excellent class! I have even a greater passion and more confidence to go out and shoot! Thanks, Tamera

This was my first course and it was very beneficial. I've had a few digital cameras thus far, but now I have a much better understanding of many of the features of my new one. The course information is well organized and the feedback is quick and helpful. Thanks to the instructor I hope to use my new digital camera to take better pictures.

Peter: I would like to let you know I’ve enjoyed this class very much. I had some experience with black & white photography in the past but there is so much difference in shooting digital. I really liked the way everything was broken down into logical steps. Probably the biggest help was the discipline of having to go out and shoot on a regular basis for the Assignments. Again many thanks. Keith Ervin

I really liked the course although I hadn't completed the whole thing due to being very sick. I was however very happy with the course; critiques knowledge and the friendliness of Peter Burian.

I learned a lot about my camera. It forced me to take it off manual and get more creative. I have more confidence with features I was very fuzzy about before.

Would take another class with Peter to be sure. I love his work.

Peter,
Thank you for opening up new horizons in using my camera. Your instructions, suggestions, assignments, and thoughtful critiques provided me with the tools that have opened up new doors in my photography education. Although the camera's manual includes how to use the different aspects of the camera, it was your guidance that showed me how to apply them in a practical and artistic sense. In fact, I probably would never had tried some of the functions of the camera without this course. I have a long way to go, but will continue to reread your lessons and redo your assignments on different subjects to hopefully continue improving. Thanks again.

I have really enjoyed this course and Peter is a great instructor. His feedback and critiques of all the pictures have been very prompt and he uses his comprehensive technical expertise to offer suggestions for each individual camera. I am really impressed how dedicated he is to this! I spent two years playing around with my camera but didn't figure out how or when to use many of the features before I took this course. I will still need to practice a great deal but I feel I am clear on the basics of photography now. My pictures have improved a good deal.

Dear Peter,
I wanted to thank you for a very positive experience throughout this course. Even as a late comer I was given the opportunity to hand in my work at my own pace and it was always promptly corrected with loads of positive feed back. I could only point and shoot before I started this course and although I still need to practise a lot I feel that now I know how to use my camera. I think that the fact that you took the trouble to research each camera individually in order to be able to guide us in any technical difficulties we encountered proves how seriously you do your job. I also enjoyed the interaction with students and instructor which made it feel like a real class with the added bonus of working at my own pace. As an ex-teacher I know how difficult it is to keep students happy and well motivated and I think you did a great job. I highly recommend this course. Thanks Peter.
Miriam.

Peter: I took your class because I needed to learn to use the digital camera, and I must say it was very thorough. I was very impressed by the structure of your course. It made the learning process go quite smoothly in a very logical progression. It’s a great feeling to pick up your camera and shoot with confidence. I feel way more confident now. I pick up the camera and actually know what everything does; what a concept! I have met my goals of learning to use the manual settings on the digital camera. I want to thank you for that, and for everything else that I’ve learned.

I found this course to be fun and informative. It was good for me to have to turn in assignments--that's what kept me motivated! I especially appreciated the fact that Peter answered questions I had during the eight weeks that didn't always pertain directly to what we were studying--the more I learned and practiced the more questions I had--and he went out of his way to help me. However, the critiques were not as helpful as I had hoped--probably because there wasn't much to say about a lot of the assignments in this course. Because of that, I admit that I have wondered if I should have disciplined myself to study from a book.

I loved taking this course. Someone else shared my observation: I knew I wasn't getting the type of photos I should with my camera, but I had no idea what to do to make them better. Having the availability of Peter's critiques was so helpful, and I also enjoyed reading the critiques of all the photos submitted. I love the format of the course, and I intend to take more classes after I have perfected the techniques that have been presented. Peter was prompt, clear and concise in his answers to questions. All in all, it was a great experience. Thanks, Peter!

This course kept me focused one lesson at a time learning the fundamentals and essentials of digital photography. I have read and studied the guide that came with my camera many, many times as well I have purchased several digital photography books. But none of them discuss the basics as simply and straight forward as this class did. The class "text" was easy to understand, informative and with accompanying photos. Especially helpful were the lessons on saving files and white balance. I learned two new techniques as well, exposure lock and shooting panoramas. I looked forward to uploading classmates photos each week and was excited to see their work-esp from all over the county. I absorbed much from reading the critique comments as well. Peter was very positive and proficient with his critiques. I only wish the class could continue longer. I will definately take another.

The course was very good. It helped me understand several areas of photography that I always became bogged down with when reading books and manuals. The critiques were the best part of the course for me. I knew my photos were not just quite right, but I didn't know what to do to fix them. It is also great to see others photos and learn from the feedback to them. The format of the course is good. It gives you the flexibility to work it into your schedule. The only area I would like to see strengthened is metering/WB. The area in which I live, I can photograph both sand on the beach during the summer and lots of snow on the ground in the winter. These create unique exposure problems, as well as, I'm sure there are other situations that need specific discussion. I look forward to taking another on line class through BetterPhoto.com. THANK YOU!

This was my first photo class ever. There seemed to be a limitless amount of information for someone with beginner skills such as myself. The feed back and the personal attention was wonderful. The order of the lessons was perfect and the amount of time to get the lessons done was also just right. I will be taking more classes in the future. This experience was great. I learned much more than I expected and I should have been more active with asking questions. This couse has a great price value for me, because I have gained the confidence to use my camera in a new way. Each lesson was a challenge for me,1.finding time to take the photos.
2. learning how to use this web site
3. how to use features of my camera
This has been a truly helpful class.

I appreciate the constructive critiques and know that there is still a lot more for me to learn. I plan on going back through each lesson and sharpening my skills even more.

BetterPhoto.com courses allow me to focus and practice on one topic at a time. The lessons, assignments and critiques are beneficial and easy to understand. I will be taking more courses in the future.

I found the lessons well written and clear and not too "text book" dry, which I really liked. I also liked that each lesson attempted to cover both SLR and fixed cameras - when we started I had a fixed, but went out and bought a SLR, so now I can go back and reread the lessons with a different perspective. I liked how each lesson addressed some of the conventional wisdom of different techniques, explaining where you agree and disagree. I read all the critiques for each photographer and learned by being able to see others' work and your comments. However, I often felt my critiques were a little soft and general. I did notice that sometimes (with me and others) you'd ask for information like f-stop or whether they'd used a tripod and it was already explained in their comments leading me to think you skimmed through our comments sometimes. Overall I enjoyed the experience; it provided me an excellent structure to explore my camera and a resource to return to as I practice. I plan to revisit and reshoot each lesson with my husband and we'll critique each other. Although the format worked for me, I plan to practice awhile on my own before considering returning for another class. I appreciate the information and inspiration of the betterphoto site and check it frequently for newly submitted photos.

Peter, I really enjoyed the course and felt I learned a lot. Heck, I haven’t set my camera to Auto since starting your course and that is “big” for me. Why? Because, before starting this course I never took it “off” of Auto. The thought of Manual scared the heck out of me. Since starting this course and playing with my camera lots, my kids got sick of me. But, now I am thrilled to say that I’ve had several paid photo shoots of other children just from word of mouth and family and friends showing off some of my shots. Thanks again Peter.

I loved the pressure to produce something each week. The lessons were written in a way that was very easy to understand and assimilate. I am much further along than I was before I took the course. My confidence has grown and I am enjoying photography more, I didn't know that would be possible. :) However, I find myself wondering how my progress would differ if I read an instructional book and used the forum (constructive critique) to continue the growth. I didn't find the critiques that informative. I think I would like to be in a classroom situation instead, where I'm face-to-face with the instructor and other students. I may be back for more, but for right now I'm going it on my own because I'm not sure this was cost effective for me. I don't mean to be negative, just honest. Thank you for the opportunity to learn.

Hello Peter,

I enjoyed your class very much, Isoaked it all in.. The way that you explained things -picture words- really help make sense to me, especially with exposure. It just suddenly "Clicked"...

The class was very useful as I learned #1) how to use my camera, #2) how I work with the camera and #3) accessories available for the camera. I learned about things that I may have never figured out on my own, much less know how to work them.

I learned a great deal about my camera and taking better pictures as a result of this course. Last week was the first time I ever entered photos in a contest at our local fair, and I won three of the six categories I entered, all with pictures taken during this class!

However, I also think each student's success is a reflection of the time they invest in taking photos for the assignments. The lessons are easy to read with some brilliant examples to demonstrate the concepts. But they won't improve your photography unless you get out and practice. I probably spent up to six hours a week taking pictures, sifting through them, and uploading the ones I chose. Some weeks were hard, while others came naturally. Your feedback was always prompt. A word of praise had me jumping in my desk chair like a kid, while suggestions for improvement sent me into fits of frustration. But it always challenged me to improve for the next week. Finally, I want to say "thank you" for gearing the lessons for both compact digitals, and digital SLR's, and providing instructions for both. To be honest, I didn't even know which type of camera I had when the class started.

I enjoyed my course with better photo, and I plan on signing up for another this fall.

Best Wishes and Happy Photography!

Peter,

I really learned a lot with your course. When I bought my SLR camera it was really over my head. I kind of felt like I had a really fancy microwave that did amazing things and all I knew how to do was make popcorn. You gave me the confidence to adjust the settings off of “auto”. I had to keep going back to the first lesson “getting to know your camera”. I will continue to practice the skills you gave me, and will look into more courses at Betterphoto.com. You are a great teacher.

Peter: This course was great! I'm starting to really understand what happens when I change the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focal length. ... Now, I've got to practice everything that you taught me. Thanks for all your helpful critiques. I think my next step will be to learn how to use Photoshop Elements.

Peter and Jim,

Thanks a bunch! This course has helped me tremendously in learning to use the features in my camera that I found intimidating/incomprehensible (white balance for instance). The photo critique feature of the lessons helped me look at my photos more clearly and pointed me in more creative directions.

This has been a WONDERFUL digital photography course!
I was able to study from the convenience of my home & do the assignments on subjects I love. The instructor led the class through lessons that built logically upon each other and the critiques & feedback were invaluable. I went from fumbling & guessing with my camera to feeling comfortable with it & knowing how to fix different problems that occur when photographing. I would recommend this course to anyone!

Peter: Thanks for all your help in this class! It has changed the way I take photos, what I photograph and how I "see" the world. It has expanded my appreciation for art and the world around me. Thanks so much for your critiques and instruction. This past weekend I photographed an old steam engine and train from the late 1800's..perfect for sepia. I enjoyed the train ride as well as the photos I took.

Thank you for your advice and expertise during this course. It was a lot of work and I struggled thru some troubles (such as this week) but I LOVED it in the long run learning so much more about shooting digitally. I discovered my Canon Digital Rebel is a photographer's tool as well as an instrument of creativity.

This course has been so helpful! Before taking this course the Idea of going of Auto seemed crazy, how could I do better than the camera at choosing. But this course really helped me realize that the camera can't analize every situation as well as human eye and creativity. I think the personal attention given to each student, in either their critiques or questions, is awesome! Thanks Peter!! My Mom got very ill a few lessons in to the course limitting my time and energy, yet I was still able to learn so much. I'm Looking forward to reviewing later as things calm down.

Peter: Thanks for your instruction, I really did not realize this camera is a mini computer. Your step by step approach is so good and I have been able to learn a great deal with each assignment. I have had alot of fun and plan to enroll in another course. Thanks too, for your critques and suggestions on my summitted photos, being able to adjust is really the key to good photography. I also read the critques of the other classmates and have learned from them and think the concept is very helpful.

I would like to say that Peter's course has been great for me and taking his online course has worked perfectly with my schedule. I have learned more from the lessons provided and the feedback from Peter than any photography book I've read to this point. It's been great fun and I'm looking forward to the next course I can take with Peter.

Hi Peter,

I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying this course and how much I am learning from it. The thing that I have noticed from the assignments that I have submitted so far is that I often don't appreciate the point of the assignment until I start analyzing my pictures to submit. On each occasion I have wished I had more time to complete the assignment again based on analyzing my pictures. Ah, for more hours in the day :-)
I think that each of the lessons are in very digestable sections and I am having a great time. Thanks!

Peter,
at the end of this corse, I want to tell you how much I gained during the last 2 months. I realy enjoyed the class, your help, the information you gave me, your patience, your tips, your quick answers, your usefull comments on my pictures. What luck I have. Although being in a far continent, I was able to benifit from the class and your experience just like any other student. I decided to take the Photoshop tool 1 and will continue to take more classes with Better Photo and hope with you in the near future. And Peter if you ever do a work shop in Europe, I would be glad to join. Thank you again for all the usefull and precious information you gave me.

I have to go with a 10 because it's been even better than I expected. When starting this course, I had never attempted to do anything manually with my camera. I have learned so much from this course and Peter's comments have really helped me to improve. I'd highly recommend this course to not only a novice like me but to anyone wishing to fine-tune their digital shots. ...
